I'm not defending anybody. Can't really blame Selig for milking the era. He's employed based on the profitability of the product. Can't really blame the players for maximizing their income. Why should they have cared if the league didn't? The investigation was morbidly dishonest and made by morbidly dishonest people. The reality is that the investigation, because of the obvious crooked, circus-like nature of it and the crooked, conflicted polititian conducting it, should have discredited the game far more than any drug use did.
Tickets cost a fortune. If people think the game is credible, they'll go. If this dog and pony show of an investigation humors the fans enough to keep them buying tickets, what else matters to Selig?
Actually, based on Selig's sterling character, nothing should.
But what offends me is how Selig and MLB used players like McGuire, Sosa, Brady Anderson, Greg Vaughn, Clemens, Bonds etc....Knowing exactly what was happening. After the era is milked completely, suddenly, Selig morphs into some kind of paragon of virtue. Then in their flagrant acts of self-preservation, they trash the very people who made them rich in the first place. It's like using a show steer for meat after it can no longer be shown.
Bud Selig is a piece of excrement.
