I sense alot of sarcasm in this thread.  The fact is, Brian Scalabrine is not a mascot, except to those fans who are rental fans. The ones who just showed up on this site when we got KG and Ray, and started competing again.  That's when the rental fans started showing up.

For most of the rest of us, while we recognize Scal's limitations, we also appreciate his contributions. Such as when he filled in admirably in '08 when KG was out, and the team did not skip a beat. And most of last season, when he gave meaningful minutes on both ends of the floor, hitting key shots, always hustling, always knowing how to space the floor. Why do you think, despite his athletic limitations, that Doc plays him so much?  Because he knows his limitations, plays his role, supports his teammates, and rarely screws up.

He has never once complained about his minutes, has been at times mocked by the "fans" in the Garden who yell at him to shoot a 3 in garbage time each time he touches the ball.  Those "fans" are pathetic.

I have followed Scal all 4 years with the Celtics, and it took me two years to "get" why Danny signed him in the first place.  Now I get it, and I, for one, will truly miss him if he goes.

it wasn't until kg and ray that scal started playing within his limitations.  he was downright awful before that, either trying to do too much or doing nothing at all.

i agree he is not a worthless player, but the "rental fans" you speak of are the ones that witnessed a worthwhile scalabrine... while the true fans remember what a disaster he was in boston before that.

Where's the same level of hatred for Pruitt who has done less per dollar than Scal? Or Justin Reed, or Dan Dickau, or Orien Greene, or Gerald Green, or Jiri Welsch, or Tom Gugliotta, or Chris Mihm, or Brandon Hunter, or Jumaine Jones, or Kedrick Brown, or Grant Long, and on and on...

Face it guys. We have had a lot of players over the years that have been complete wastes of money. Many much more so than Scal. The main reason you guys pick on him incessantly is because he is a pasty white redhead. If he were just some non-descript guy no one would even bring the guy up. Pretty sad that the majority of the negativity surrounds the guys looks and weight. Pretty immature.

If you leave Scal you will be missed.

I was really sad when Scalabrine left New Jersey.

It took me a while to forgive him for being so out of shape in a contract year.  what kind of brain-doctor would christen someone who makes that choice?!

However, scal has proven to be a class act and eventually outgrew the "Captain Cheeseburger" nickname he quickly adopted around my household.  He even personally drove himself and Tony Allen to the hospital that one time.

Remember that speech on the jumbotron he gave about vote for him for MVP because he "passes the ball to Paul."  What a good sport and classy guy for rolling with his sarcastic fan base.  If this is good-bye, Good luck #44, and thanks.

i really disliked scal's game since he got here.  but i have to tip my cap to him for the job he did this season and the grit/determination he demonstrated with those head injuries.  im still not a big fan of his game, but he has my respect.  he can be utilized on a situational basis.

I'm willing to put a lot of money on the thought that his body fat % is a much lower number than the average person on this site. Mine included.

It is definitely easier to stick to your personal physical criticisms of the guy than to try and argue that he doesn't have value. There are 20 million dollars in his pocket from NBA teams that would disagree with you.

As we know, Scal was not blessed with many useful physical attributes for basketball. But I like Scal because everything he has he's earned with a lot of hard work. He compensates by knowing all the plays, hustling more than anyone, and being an all around good guy (classy/funny/charitable/ect.).

With that said, I can't believe what he has been earning over the last four years. His few good plays and jokes in the locker room do not justify $15 million dollars. In hindsight, I don't think most of you would sign Scal if you could do it over again. I know I wouldn't because that money could have been used for someone useful.  We've had plenty of drafted players not reach potential or signed questionable veterans who were way past their prime...but not with significant long term commitments.

Again, I love Scal as a person and I am impressed with his ability to get that contract, but it's always shocked me that it happened in the first place. I'll miss the way he works his butt off on the court, but I won't be sad to see him leave if we can get any amount of talent in return.

And about the fat...maybe its just his body type. Maybe some people just can't get a toned body. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, but im curious about his diet

If scal leaves the C's I would be bummed. I'd get over it though. I would be mildly more bummed than I would be if its true Bill Walker is leaving town.

You can miss him for the intangibles that he brings, but you cannot miss him for anything that he brings on the floor. He's just not very athletic out there and isn't a threat. I dont like when the bandwagoners egg him on to shoot or laugh in his face either. I'm usually yelling the opposite thing, saying get rid of the ball.

If Scal was any good, we wouldn't have had a problem with bigs coming off the bench once KG went down THIS year. Scal will barely touch the floor this year now that Rasheed is the first guy coming off the bench. He might get garbage time minutes, or minutes when Rasheed gets suspended, etc. but to know that he has made 3 million dollars for the past 5 years for being "a good guy" is painful.

Hey Ainge, I'm a pretty good guy, and would be a great teammate. Think about it!

TP.  Completely agree.  Scal's main use is right now, the value of his expiring contract.  He's a hustle player who gives a lot but his talent is lacking.  He's not strong enough to play stout defense against any of the good power forwards in the league, and he doesn't bring much offensively other than his once in a blue moon wide open 3 pointers because nobody respects him enough to guard him all the way out to the perimeter.

The goal of the team is to win a championship.  You do that by gathering the best players you can.  Sorry to break it, but Scal will never count as being in that 'best player' group.

Perhaps you misunderstood me. I love Scali as a guy and a player. People say that he is a horrible player and is out of shape which is completely not true. Tell me, could a guy not in unbelievable physical condition put up numbers like 4ppg for his career? I never joke about a guys appearance, Scal included.

...and Vin Baker, Mark Blount, Pervis Ellison, Theo Ratliff, Sebastian Telfair...

Lots of players in celtics history (and around the league) have been paid more than they've been worth.  Yes, Scal is one of them, but Scal's 15 mil over 5 years has received more than its fair share  of criticism in my opinion.  By the standards of the last 6 years or so (btw, this year has been a 'recession' year, unfair to look at talent making 3 million this year as comparisons), Scal has been overpaid by about a million or 2 per year.  He's probably been a 1-2 mill a year player rather than a 3-4 mill guy (though he's been worth more over the past 2 years).  Granted -- DA overpaid for Brian Scalabrine -- but, lots of fuss over what probably amounts to an overpayment of about 7 mill over 5 years (check out Tracy McGrady for a guy who wastes $7 million every 3 months). There are too many vastly overpaid NBA players for DA/Scal to receive the kind of grief they've gotten for a rather modest (by NBA standards) contract.

His scouting report is funny:

Overview: A 6-9 tweener, stuck between the 3 and 4 positions in the NBA, who basically makes a living off his ability to knock down shots and make hustle plays. Strictly a role player, it’s pretty hard to believe that he somehow managed to convince the Celtics to give him a 5-year, 15 million dollar contract considering his limitations. Was a member of the 2008 NBA Championship team.

He has a 30'' max vert according to this!? not bad. How does a 6'9'' man with a vert like that not throw it down? haha.

too bad it doesnt say body fat%, im curious now
