FREE AGENCY: Blazers to sign Millsap
Paul Millsap | Jazz
The Oregonian reports the Blazers are preparing a "toxic" offer sheet to Utah Jazz restricted free agent Paul Millsap. The Blazers hope the provisions of the contract will make it too difficult for the Jazz, who are already over the luxury tax threshold, to match.

The newspaper also reports the Blazers may renounce the rights to Petteri Koponen and Joel Freeland so their cap room will increase from $7.7M to $8.9M.

Millsap told the Blazers he would be willing to backup LaMarcus Aldridge at the power forward position.

If the Millsap plan doesn't go through, the Blazers will go after free agent Brandon Bass.

He's willing to still be a backup, and a good one at that.

Interesting.  I was hoping that they'd go after Odom, to keep him out of LA.  I also figured they preferred Lee over Millsap.

If true, this probably would prevent the Jazz from trading Boozer.

We'll see how toxic they can make the offer sheet. Even if it truly is bad, matching and then trading Boozer would still be an option.

That is the better option for Utah.  They are more than likely losing Boozer at the end of the year anyway, so they probably should go that route.  Though if they let both go as well as Okur they will be under the cap enough to get an impact player (they only have 38 million on the books next year, which should be enough to get a very good player even if it is not a max guy).

yeah, UTH will definitely have to examine the question of whether or not Millsap is good enough to build around.

If they aren't sure, it might be safer to play out the season and then take the cap room freed up by Okur and Boozer coming off the books and jump into that FA class.

and if they actually are good this year with those guys, then they could think about re-signing both...

Man, Kirilenko's contract is really sticking out right now. Not that he's terrible or anything, but he's on the books for 17 million for that super talented FA class.

on a side note, this could open CJ Miles trade talks because that would be an extra almost 4 mil off the books for them if they could trade for a player that expires this season.

I just wish the Cs could get in on this trade to somehow net Travis Outlaw (as someone posted earlier, Scal + Pruitt to Portland for Outlaw would free up an additional $1.5M for Portland after they cut Pruitt).

He should sign with the Thunder. They'd have the best young starting five in recent memory with im.

Blazers need to unload Outlaw. He's too good to get spot minutes.

When did Millsap become worth almost 9 million annually?

he was at about 14 and 9. Very solid, but yes, 9 mil sounds like a huge waste of bank

I think Utah needs to get a shot blocker in the worst way. Their only shot blocker is AK-47 and he's a SF. I think Milsap and/or Boozer can be big pieces for a winner. But they need a Perkins like center who can anchor their defense. Until they get that they'll never get deep in the playoffs. (Their WCF trip the year Dallas got knocked out was an abberation)

Where does Jeff Green fit in? I don't think the Thunder are a good fit for Milsap.

The Portland Trail Blazers have offered Utah Jazz free agent Paul Millsap a four-year contract worth between $32 million and $36 million, according to league sources.

The offer includes a hefty signing bonus that will make it difficult for Utah to match. The Jazz will be presented with the offer Saturday and have seven days to match because Millsap is a restricted free agent.

So there is the offer...

If Utah matches, they will need to trade Boozer. Boozer to Hamilton talks might start up again.

If Utah doesn't though, that's quite a lot to pay for a backup (though they have insurance incase LMA doesn't accept his extension)
