...and now, the CelticsBlog Fantasy Draft Day 1 Recap!
TOM: Thanks, guys. Now that we've got Day 1 on the books, who would you say was the biggest winner in the first round?
STEVE: It had to be Bulls, Tom. After a few trades, they ended up with Chris Paul, Al Jefferson, and Pau Gasol. That's an amazing nucleus to build around.
TOM: It better be. They don't have another pick until Round 7.
STEVE: Right - so they're probably going to end up starting Tony Allen's little sister and some homeless guy at the 2 and 3 spots. However, any time you can draft a European player who looks like the bass player from the Muppet Show, you've got to make that trade.
TOM: So that brings us to the next question: who was the biggest loser in Round 1?
STEVE: Without a question, it's got to be the Minnesota Timberwolves. Their GM went AWOL after a three-day meth binge, leaving them without a single player from Day 1. Still, it's an improvement over the McHale era.
TOM: Any other big surprises in the first round?
STEVE: There were a couple of minor reaches: Granger at 8 and Rondo at 21. If they continue to improve at the clip they did last year, though, both will end up looking like steals. The main surprises for me were Blake Griffin at 20 and Greg Oden at 27. Both have tremendous upside potential and are capable of becoming franchise guys in two to four years, but are just as likely to be complete busts. We could wait to see how they develop before passing judgment, but instead I'll enjoy mercilessly blasting them on the air while each player goes through their inevitable early-season struggles. With any luck, they'll be crying themselves to sleep at night by the time the All-Star break rolls around, broken and empty shells of the men they once were.
TOM: Sounds like fun! Thanks for the insight, Steve.
STEVE: My pleasure.
