Word out of Portland is that Rudy Fernandez is fuming over the Trailblazers interest in Hedo Turkoglu and wasn't too happy with the exit of Sergio Rodriguez. Also, Portland is still trying to shed some salary in an effort to give Hedo everything they can. So how about this:
Boston sends Portland Brian Scalabrini and Gabe Pruitt
Portland sends Boston Travis Outlaw and Rudy Fernandez
First off, Gabe Pruitt's contract is not 100% guaranteed so Portland could cut him and save $400,000 with the deal saving them a total of almost $1 million. It also gets a disgruntled player off the team and brings in a guy who has some veteran leadership skills in Scal.
Boston in the meantime gets two good backups in positions they need them.
Sure Portland might get better offers but is it going to hurt to offer this and maybe use it as a starting point
Sure, it wouldn't hurt to offer, but the Blazers will instantly reject. The Blazers aren't going to give up cheap young talent for cap relief or expiring contracts because they aren't facing the same financial problems as other teams around the league. No matter how disgruntled, those players are assets not liabilities.
The reason for saving money is that they might get into a bidding war for Hedo Turkoglu and will need every dollar to offer up to him now. If they cut Gabe, because his contract is not guaranteed 100% they can then take that extra $1 million and throw it into a Hedo Turkoglu contract that might make the difference in getting Hedo to choose Portland and not Toronto.
Believe it or not but over the course of a 5 year contract that means an extra $7 million total they could offer Hedo long term. My guess as the Turkoglu negotiations get longer Portland is going to try to move people on their roster for non-guaranteed contracts and savings so they can make wiggle room to bump Hedo's offer up.
It's the only reason I even suggest this trade because otherwise, in a vacuum, it's a stupid trade for Portland. But if they can take a disgruntled player and a player they won't be able to use if they sign Turk and move them for extra cash that might secure them the free agent they seem desperate for, then there could be a chance of this happening.
