Word out of Portland is that Rudy Fernandez is fuming over the Trailblazers interest in Hedo Turkoglu and wasn't too happy with the exit of Sergio Rodriguez. Also, Portland is still trying to shed some salary in an effort to give Hedo everything they can. So how about this:

Boston sends Portland Brian Scalabrini and Gabe Pruitt
Portland sends Boston Travis Outlaw and Rudy Fernandez

First off, Gabe Pruitt's contract is not 100% guaranteed so Portland could cut him and save $400,000 with the deal saving them a total of almost $1 million. It also gets a disgruntled player off the team and brings in a guy who has some veteran leadership skills in Scal.

Boston in the meantime gets two good backups in positions they need them.

Sure Portland might get better offers but is it going to hurt to offer this and maybe use it as a starting point

That's god awful for Portland.

I have to agree.  No reason for POR to do this.  I agree with the fact that Rudy might be a good fit, and he might be slightly less likely to complain on a championship contender, but the part that makes me nervous is that the guy wants to be THE MAN and THE STAR.  Thta obviously won't happen in Boston.  He's a good talent, but I think for much cheaper you can get a guy to come in and play hard at that position and still be effective.

Portland wouldn't give up either of those guys individually for Scal and Pruitt.
Go Celtics.

Sure, it wouldn't hurt to offer, but the Blazers will instantly reject. The Blazers aren't going to give up cheap young talent for cap relief or expiring contracts because they aren't facing the same financial problems as other teams around the league. No matter how disgruntled, those players are assets not liabilities.

Even the deals he makes aren't that bad.

The Big Baby option at least gets them a solid young player and fills a likely position of need for Portland. I don't think it works (I wouldn't go so far as Jordan and Pippen), but it's certainly a much better offer.
Go Celtics.

I would not even think twice if Portland wanted to
deal Outlaw and Rodriguez for Scal and Pruitt.

However this is 'fantasy island' kind of thinking.

Portland would have to be drinking the IPA micro brew to
make a deal like this to Boston.

The reason for saving money is that they might get into a bidding war for Hedo Turkoglu and will need every dollar to offer up to him now. If they cut Gabe, because his contract is not guaranteed 100% they can then take that extra $1 million and throw it into a Hedo Turkoglu contract that might make the difference in getting Hedo to choose Portland and not Toronto.

Believe it or not but over the course of a 5 year contract that means an extra $7 million total they could offer Hedo long term. My guess as the Turkoglu negotiations get longer Portland is going to try to move people on their roster for non-guaranteed contracts and savings so they can make wiggle room to bump Hedo's offer up.

It's the only reason I even suggest this trade because otherwise, in a vacuum, it's a stupid trade for Portland. But if they can take a disgruntled player and a player they won't be able to use if they sign Turk and move them for extra cash that might secure them the free agent they seem desperate for, then there could be a chance of this happening.

That may be true, nick, but there's no real reason to give away both Outlaw and Rudy to free up a million dollars. Maybe (though not likely) they'd give up Outlaw for TA and Pruitt - they'd save $1.5 mil after renouncing Pruitt.

More intriguing, though, may be if Portland sends Outlaw to Orlando outright for Hedo at a higher rate (and better bonuses). Would Orlando pay the extra $4 million (up to $8 with luxury tax) to take on Outlaw and add bench depth?
Go Celtics.
