The Spurs desperately needed a player like Jefferson. Hopefully he will prevent the team from standing outside the arc and bombing threes all game.

It's official, when cut, I want Bowen.

Unfortunately, I think, like Roy, that he runs back to SA.

Not me, I want Kurt Thomas.  He's a solid defender and would be a great veteran presence in our front court.

Unfortunately, Bucks will probably keep him...

Wow, great trade for the Spurs. Hopefully they can topple the Fakers next season.

From ESPN :

Quote
The Milwaukee Bucks agreed to trade Richard Jefferson to the San Antonio Spurs for Bruce Bowen, Kurt Thomas and Fabricio Oberto a Bucks source told ESPN.com.

The two teams have agreed to the deal in principle. A trade call to make the deal official is coming later Tuesday.

The move gives the Spurs a dynamic wing scorer to play alongside Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili. The Spurs had promised to make their team better this summer and adding Jefferson for role players should give them a huge shot in the arm.

The Bucks incentive to make the trade is largely financial. Bowen, Oberto and Thomas are all in the last year of their contracts. The deal will clear $15 million off the books for the Bucks next season and give Milwaukee more flexibility for next year. It also saves them roughly $3 million this year. That may give the Bucks the wiggle room to sign one of their restricted free agents -- either Charlie Villanueva or Ramon Sessions -- next year.

Bowen, Oberto and Thomas also give the Bucks some veterans who will fill key holes for the team. The move also opens up some playing time for the Bucks lottery pick last year, Joe Alexander.

However, Bowen has a nonguaranteed contract for next season, so the Bucks could release him, further saving about $4 million next season and giving them a better chance of retaining Sessions and Villanueva. In that case, Bowen might return to San Antonio later this summer.

Great deal for the Spurs, they now have a terrific starting five, they just need to get a good bench and they will be contenders again in the West if they stay healthy. Thoughts?

He has to wait a certain time period, but after that he can certainly go back to the Spurs. Just a needed vacation for an aging veteran anyways.

Yeah, the waiting period is 20 days in the off-season (30 in the regular season).

Less in the off-season? That is weird, I figured that it would be longer. Oh well he won't miss anything important if he chooses to do that.

The Spurs should now be trying to swing Ginobili and Bonner for a younger all-star shooting guard.

why? RJ has played SG in the past, he can do so again.

I think they should try to win the title. they traded bench pieces to upgrade the heck out of thier starting lineup.

They should keep manu as the 6th man. That's a dangerous team again now.

the only thing that worries me about this is if SAS are now a more attractive landing pad for Sheed or Dice.

We don't need any more competition for those guys services than is already out there.

So you wouldn't be interested in potential trades with teams that are looking to perhaps cut salary? Maybe trading the chronically injured Ginobili for any of Carter, Richardson, or Jackson? You don't think that would make the Spurs better? Those names were just complete speculation on my part. You never know who could be available, maybe even better players than the ones mentioned above.

Yeah.  The other problem we have is that if money becomes a factor, Texas doesn't have a state income tax, while Massachusetts of course does.

Oh, wow, Antonio McDyess would be a beautiful fit in that starting lineup!!

They could offer him a lot more minutes and a larger role in the team. That will be a tough offer to turn down.
