  • Doc could learn a thing or two from Norman Dale
By the way, for anybody who thinks this offer was never made, apparently a Pistons official confirmed it to the Detroit Free Press.  Link.

Roy, Best part of this link is the comment somebody posted

Maybe Rondo did have a nice postseason, but did you see how dirty he was? He punched Brad Miller in the face on a game winning layup, threw elbows and tripped people on a whim. I know, I know, the championship Bad Boys did some of this stuff too, but I would NOT want to see Rondo on a pistons team. As far as Ray Allen goes, three 2 for 12 nights followed by one 8 for 15 night is not my idea of a consistent scorer. Who are the people that would have pulled the trigger on this one?

Why would anybody want rondo?? He punches people in the face

Haha.  Yeah, it's funny to think a team that has employed Isiah, Laimbeer, Rodman, Rasheed, and Maxiell would be upset about physical / borderline dirty play.

Most if not all of this is a Pistons smokescreen.  Bank it.

To help increase the value of some poor contracts.  I would NOT be surprised to see 1 of those names go in a S/T.

I buy that Ainge has talked about Rondo.  I'm pretty comfortable Sacramento and Phoenix initiated deals for him.  Whether that means there is smoke, we'll see.

A S/T for whom? They have the cap space to sign who they want. Unless you're thinking they'll go after both Boozer and Gordon and giving both huge deals.

Interesting.

Appears that the NBA - and Celtics management - don't hold Rondo in the same esteem as the blog.

I don't think it means that at all, i think it means they are seeing what they can get for a young prospect at what is likely his highest level of value since next year he will command quite a payday.

It would be irresponsible to not see what kind of deals are out there.

Well depends on the who you are talking about. A lot of people here think he should be untouchable. Others would move him for CP3/LeBron/Dwight and that is about it.

I think it is natural for any blog to over rate their subject team's players. Especially young ones that the team drafted and whom they have watched develop.

Nothing at all wrong with trying to sell high, given the holes that remain in Rondo's game. Doesn't mean you have to close on the deal.

And no, Rondo's not untouchable. Nor should he be. I suspect these talks are a form of protection against an insane contract request - such as a max deal - from Rondo and his agent.

Natural? Not the word I'd use. Expected, maybe.

I believe it goes both ways.  You have either players that are overvalued OR undervalued.

Ultimately, it is interesting to see what Detroit does.  Do they clear more room off next year's cap when the best FA's are available OR do they try to fill the voids this year with second level guys like Shawn Marion and Ben Gordon.

By doing this trade, they could still sign Gordon AND have the flexibility to wait out next year for one of the potential stars if they hold off on Rondo.

Until Rondo is "traded", do we really know his value?  I've heard his name associated with some deals I'd do and others I wouldn't consider.

Ray Allen, Shawn Marion OR Ben Gordon, Rajon Rondo AND the flexibilty to go after Chris Bosh next year

vs.

Hamilton, Prince, Stuckey, and the ability to secure Gordon OR Marion OR wait next year for Bosh.

You're quite correct. Plenty of folks here who still don't accurately value bench versatility.

I think the only thing we can infer about Rondo's value thus far is that other NBA GMs don't see it as high as some here on this blog do.

I think it comes down to his jump shot. The Celtics have come up with an excellent system to compensate for it, but not all coaches run that sort of system. D'Antoni would never play a PG who couldn't shoot for long stretches. Plus people fear he's just a product of the talent around him.

Those two will keep his trade value down. Now if only his agent would adjust his contract demands similarly  ;).

Who is undervalued on the C's team by most posters?

I would go with natural coach, as well as expected.

This is a Celtics blog after all, and most Celtics fans (myself included) are likely to have seen more of their own teams player than other teams young players, and thus be convinced they are better than any others are.

Probably some truth to that, although the system doesn't work with Garnett on the bench, as Orlando exploited Rondo pretty easily on the defensive end.
