I like Gabe just for his defense alone. he played some very good Defense against some of the bigger points in the league this year, notably Deron Williams.
I think based on his personality, the best way to maximize Gabe's production is to get him into a set rotation and let him keep working in that rotation as he goes through his bumps and bruises with the mistakes he makes. I think if you keep yanking him if he makes a single mistake, he's the type of guy that spirals downward mentally.
It depends on how you see him as far as potential goes I guess. I see him easily filling that back up point role with some great D, decent passing and good shotting on spot ups.
But I'd definately take the attitude with him " Gabe, you're getting such and such minutes at the point this year, I'm going to let you play through the mistakes, just keep working and don't worry about the mistakes, it's part of the growing process. Just let it rip out there."
Gabe appears to me to be the type of personality you need to prod along. And I think that's what coaching ro management is about, learning how to motivate and get the best out of each player based on their personality.
Guys like KG, Walker or Rondo you can probably kick their butt all day and they'll brush it off. If you're too "gentle" with them they probably won't respect you. Guys like Gabe or Ray, with mellower personalities, you probably need to do less screaming and more prodding and back patting to get the most out of them.
All that being said, I go with Gabe BUT, I either also go with House as 3rd string, or I sing another true Point, A Vet min contract.
I do the same at small forward. I really like Walker here. But based on his youth and knees, I play him from day one and let him grow but I try to bring in a Vet min guy who can step in if necessary.
