I want one or two of the following players:Shawn Marion, Travis Outlaw, Carlos Boozer, Michael Redd, Gerald Wallace, Emeka Okafor, Monta Ellis, Stephen Jackson.  I want somebody who is like a 6'9 foward with speed and can score 15+ a game. I don't want anybody from CLE, DET,ORL,LA.  I don't know much about the contracts and the MLE and all that stuff, so let me know if any of these players are possible.  I think if we can keep KG,PP,Ray,Rondo,Perk,Star and 1 of the following players Powe,BBD,House and trade the other 2 and trade TA, Pruitt, Scal, and keep Walker or Giddens.  That would really give us star power to make another 4 or 5 guys for 1 deal where we pick up another legitimate star.  That would give us star power with KG,PP,Ray,Rondo,Perk,Star and 1 or 2 of the players mentioned above, with BBD Powe or House.  Let me know what everyone thinks.

Matrix didn't want to come here when he had the chance in '07, so let him keep his declining skills in a place like Toronto where the draft lottery is an annual affair.

I'd take Gerald Wallace anyday. Same with Okafor.

  • Doc could learn a thing or two from Norman Dale
Of the players you listed:

Shawn Marion is a free agent, but may be out of our price range;

Travis Outlaw is under contract with Portland, and has a very reasonable deal;

Carlos Boozer intends to opt out of his deal and will become a free agent, but is likely out of our price range.

Michael Redd is probably available, but is owed $35 million over the next two seasons.  We'd need to trade Ray to get him.

Gerald Wallace has four years left on his deal, at $9.5 million each season.  It's unlikely that we have the pieces to get him, even if Danny wanted to take on a long-term contract.

Emeka Okafor has five years left on his deal, at more than $12 million per season.  Charlotte will hang on to him.

Monta Ellis is owed 5 years, $55 million, has injury concerns, and showed a poor attitude and questionable decision making.  He's probably available for the right package.

Stephen Jackson is very popular in Golden State, and is signed to a reasonable deal (albeit for four seasons).  The only way I see him being traded is if we take back other bad salaries in return.  Even then, I'm sure the Warriors would want legitimate pieces to rebuild with.

I think our team should probably be focused more on adding role players, rather than trying for a home run with stars like the guys named above.

I'd take jamal Crawfprd if he'll leave GS and take the MLE and is willing to be unselfish (not too unselfish) and play tough defense

Prior to his injury, I would have argued for a Ray-for-Redd deal; we'd get a little younger, they'd save some $$, and the dropoff in immediately play wouldn't be huge.  With Redd coming back from injury, don't think I would go there.

So did Marion not want to come here before we got KG & Ray or after?  I know certain players don't want to play for the Celtics, but he's not going to win a title in Toronto.  Who do some of you think is the best superstar or great star player we got realistically get?  And I'm OK with getting good backups, but we need a couple of quality back ups, one McDyess I'm not sure will be enough, we need like 3 McDyess quality back ups.

What kind of a deal is JR Smith signed to? If I recall, he was a Restricted FA last year and Denver resigned him without having to match anyone. How long do they have him locked up for? I think he's ideal for our bench--its a unit that lacks the ability to create its own shot or manufacture offense consistently. You can't get a bench player more adept at creating offense out nothing than JR Smith. Will he be available this summer?

If not what would it take to swing a trade for him? BBD, TA and House for JR Smith? I would hate to see two of those guess go (guess which two. No really, guess) but JR Smith would be worth it.
Grab a few boards, keep the TO's under 14, close out on shooters and we'll win.

Yes, but I'm saying after we got KG and Ray would Marion be interested?

One of Marion's big problems is that he hates to be overshadowed.  Seven Seconds or Less, the book about the Suns 2004-05 season chronicles this pretty nicely.  I highly doubt that someone who was so insecure with the idea of being a third banana in PHO would be comfortable with being a bench player.  He also said in an interview last year or two ago on ESPN (I think it was a Bucher article, TP if anyone grabs a link) that being the best player on a not so good team appealed to him.

During an interview a few years ago, Marion implied (but I don't think he explicitly said) that he'd rather be a superstar on a bad team than a lesser star on a contender.  I'm not sure if he'd be willing to accept a role on the team where he'd be the 4th or 5th best player.

Skills-wise, though, he's a great fit for our squad.  I just have questions about his attitude.

Apparently we are like minded in our Marion thinking Roy haha.

Haha.  You're right.  I had overlooked your post, and we see that issue dead on.

Here's the quote you were looking for, by the way:

Quote
So what about it, Shawn? Would you rather be a 30-point scorer and an MVP candidate on a lesser team, say, one only flirting with the postseason, than the sidekick to the sidekick in Phoenix? "Wow, that's interesting," he says thoughtfully, as if he's never entertained the prospect before.

Marion pauses nearly 10 seconds to concentrate on the question. Only the muted sound of late-afternoon traffic outside the two-story living room breaks the silence. He fiddles with the remote as if it holds the answer. "I've never been asked that," he continues. "That would be an interesting situation to be in, to really show people what I can do.

"But we'd be in the playoffs, right?"

You want a 6'9" forward so you put Monta Ellis there?? Makes sense.  ::)
