two sources told ESPN's T.J. Quinn and Mark Fainaru-Wada that the drug used by Ramirez is HCG -- human chorionic gonadotropin. HCG is a women's fertility drug typically used by steroid users to restart their body's natural testosterone production as they come off a steroid cycle. It is similar to Clomid, the drug Bonds, Giambi and others used as clients of BALCO.

Quote
A source with intimate knowledge of steroids told ESPN that a male athlete usually uses HCG after a cycle of steroids because steroids often shut down the testosterone-making ability of the testicles. HCG restores their capacity to make testosterone. The source said that some males may use HCG in lieu of steroids also. HCG by itself can provide a substantial boost in the body's own testosterone, and this may provide some performance-enhancement benefits.

So basically the inference is that he was taking steroids, and used this to get back to normal.  Although it is possible he was taking this just to generate testosterone, if that were the case, I would assume he would just take testosterone.

As much as I started laughing when he was caught, I must say I am disappointed.  Manny was always seen as one of those guys that wouldnt be a juicer.  not a huge home run hitter (hits a lot, but not 50-60, etc...), beautiful swing, blah blah.

It's too bad.

Someone else in the thread guessed Rangers and Orioles, but he messed up the quotes so the answers weren't easy to see.

wrong and wrong

Here's a fun trivia question... 22 players have been suspended while on major league rosters. What 2 teams have the most punished cheaters?

Well, it sure as hell won't be our beloved Sox.  Selig had one of our board members, a fossil political hack, do the phony steroid investigation.

This is probably payback for Manny's act while with the Sox pre-trade.  MLB has absolutely zero credibility on this subject.

Yup, defintely not the Sox haha

I know one of them is the Mariners.  Or at least, the Mariners organization; I know they've had a ton of minor leaguers suspended, and a couple major leaguers, too.  I was reading the other one somewhere recently, and now I can't remember which organization it was or where I read it.  I'll guess Braves.

TP for Hobbs, the Mariners are one of them: Ryan Franklin, Jamal Strong, and Mike Morse

The Braves are incorrect

Well, I guess that ends any discussion of him being prescribed this for a legitimate medical purpose.  Unless, of course, Manny was in need of female fertility drugs.

Eight of those top 17 home run hitters played in what is commonly referred to as the Steroid Era. And six of those eight modern-day sluggers have been associated with performance-enhancing drugs: Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro, Rodriguez and Ramirez. The only modern sluggers to have escaped such a connection are Ken Griffey Jr. and Jim Thome.

If there was any player in baseball who could get himself suspended for taking drugs to address erectile dysfunction, it would be Manny.

For as infuriating as he was here, he definitely wasn't someone I had pegged using 'roids.  He really isn't that big, and he certainly doesn't have the aggression associate with them.  Wouldn't be shocked to either see him cleared or at least learn he wasn't taking them to enhance his play (baseball that is...).

He won't be cleared, because he isn't appealing.  In terms of him being innocent, if a) the drug is commonly used in conjunction with steroids, b) is against baseball rules, and c) is almost never used for the medical purpose Manny alleges he was taking it for, then I'm not inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.

In terms of not looking bulked up, many designer steroids (such as the ones A-roid were taking) are designed *not* to add much bulk, but rather lean muscle tissue.

I'm a little saddened by the Manny suspension, but I have little to no doubt that he was a user.

New theory:

Manny is actually an innocent victim of a misunderstanding over an erectile dysfunction medication. However, after Manny learns he gets two months off, he drops the appeal.

I always thought Manny looked pretty jacked. Is he really 'not that big'?

Tough to say, I guess given how baggy he wore his uniform.  However, he certainly didn't look like Bonds or McGwire.  I always thought that some of his bulk was a little bit of fat.
