The Clash
Sex Pistols
Ramones
Husker Du
Social Distortion
Wire
Patti Smith
Buzz Cocks
Gang Green (Boston Nod)
Minor Threat

I've listened to a fair amount of social d...and I don't think you can call them pop anything..they're a great band but maybe we ought to just call them punk...same goes for The Vandals, and Operation Ivy, no?

I tried to stay mainstream.  If I was only focusing on punk / hardcore I'd have a different list.  That being said, Social D is the in the top 3 for mainstream in this group.
Call me a sap, but I love my kids more than anything!

  • Doc could learn a thing or two from Norman Dale
Clash
Ramones
Sex Pistols
Misfits
Patti Smith
Bad Brains

drawing a blank on more

love the Violent Femmes, but not sure if they're punky or what

Yeah, if we're talking about straight up punk the Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Misfits and Clash would have to be mentioned.

Yeah, I was shocked that the Sex Pistols didn't make the original list, until I saw it was "Punk-Pop".

I'm not sure if they're really punk (or pop), but they're often described as it, so I'll mention the Pogues.  Continuing the Irish / Celtic theme, the Dropkick Murphys, as well.

Bad Religion - started pop punk. Suffer is one of the best almums of all time. Also Brett Gurewitz started Epitaph records which put out a ton of pop punk.

NOFX- to me defines pop punk.  fat mike also started Fat Wreck-Chords who put out a ton of pop-punk

Deccendents/ALL - very suprized they have not been mentioned. Very. one of the beasts of the Genre. with roots in the early LA scene.

Queers- New hampshire brings the pop. Boston was always more of a straight punk town.

the Guts - Also from new hampshire. Grew up on the queers played in the queers and have been playing for about 15 years. check them out its as good as you get for pop punk

Propaghandi - less talk more rock is a fantastic album.  Later split off became the Weakerthans.

Boris the Sprinkler - Rev norb wrote a column in Maximum Rock & Roll. also fronted this band. very good.

Penywise-

Plenty more but i gotta get to work. too bad this is a fun topic.

im not really sure what qualifies as punk/pop....they seem like two completely different categories to me.

...however since the word punk came up, I always feel inclined to mention the band 'At the Drive-In'  They never really made it big before they broke up, but I always thought they were a great great band to jam too.  So Im giving them mention on this thread.

.....and just to be clear.  Thats At The Drive-In.  Not The Mars Volta.

At the Drive in was very good. I loves seeing them live.  They broke up because they were getting too big. Have you listened to Sparta?  they sound much more like ATDI then Volta does.

Sorry. Back to pop Punk......

Face to Face is a really good one.

I'll throw Lagwagon in there as well.  Honestly, the only album of theirs I really loved was Hoss, but they belong in the discussion.

I also think Alkaline Trio is great as well...although I am not sure if they really fall in the pop-punk category.

wow lagwagon i like the album before hoss, cant remember what it was called.

I really enjoy alkaline trio hadnt thought of them in that niche but i guess you could put em in there.

i think this is why i stopped trying to classify genres and sub genres. it gets way too confusing.  I mean when i had to decide if a band was thrash or power-violence it became too much for me haha

Seems to me most people's list is heavy on the punk, and almost non-existent with the pop.

And kudos to whoever mentioned MXPX.  Those dudes wrote a ton of catchy tunes.  Dont know why they never made it big.

Also, if no one has mentioned the Buzzcocks yet, they are an awesome band that could be considered punk-pop.

It's often referred to as "pop-punk"
