Great memories.  Tony proved them all wrong!
Not to take us off topic, but my favorite Spurs title is probably the one in 1999, if only becuase of Phil Jackson's ridiculous comment that it deserved an asterisk next to it because it was a shortened season.  I suppose he wants an asterisk next to the Cs 2008 title since the Lakers didn't have Bynum.  :'(

I'm shocked he hasn't yet pulled that out from his bag of excuses. Maybe he has and we missed it? Why anyone wants a Lakers/Cavs series is beyond me. All the in-game and post-game whining (not to mention stat-padding and flopping galore) will just overshadow any basketball being played.
Perk can out-whine both teams in-game. Post-game, the Lakers do have a bunch of whiners, starting with Kobe. Not sure who the post-game whiner is supposed to be on the Cavs.

Forgive me if i've missed sarcasm, it's hard to pick up in text obviously, but the whining starts with this guy;

Not the refs. Not Shaq.

Others I'd throw in there which has been said are Duncan in '03 and Olajuwon in '95 & '95.

Ha ha ha, no team ever wins a title by the efforts of just one player. I know what you are asking but, still, no team ever wins with just one player. I have been "second fiddle" on several very good teams and there were lots and lots of games where our "star" player didnt show up and others carried the team. Any Celtics fan should understand this. Again, I do understand what you are saying and most title teams have more then one star but even those teams do not win titles with just two players. We dont win the title last year without Perk, Rondo, Posey, House, Powe, ....

The Bulls won the 90-91 Championship with 1 All Star(MJ)...but we all know S.Pippen was a great player, just hadn't made the All Star team at that point in his career.

Obviously no player ever wins a title by himself, but a transcendant player doesn't require as much help as maybe others do.  That said, the supporting cast definitely makes a difference.

The example I've seen used often in this thread is the '03 Spurs.  That team makes a clear example of both principles in play.  There were no other in-their-prime studs on that team, as they were all either too old (Robinson, Kevin Willis), too young (Parker, Ginobili, Steven Jackson) or in prime role players (Bowen, Malik Rose, Speedy Claxton).  There was talent there but out of time phase, and Duncan was clearly the driving force.  His play that playoffs was transcendant.

On the other hand, his teammates and the coaching scheme did take care of their business as well and keep the team in the position where Duncan could carry them.  The one area where age didn't matter so much was on defense, and those Spurs were uniquely built to be difficult on the then-champion Lakers with lots of big bodies to throw at Shaq and lots of athletic/agressive wings to throw at Kobe.  In that respect Duncan's cast has become underrated over time, because without that kind of team/scheme help, Duncan isn't in a position to beat the Lakers even with his high level of play.

Superstars can make it easier for their team to win, but even the non All-Star casts make big-time contributions to make it possible for a team to win a title.

Usually the team with one allstar has to have a few excellent defenders and play great team defense.  The Heat seem like the only team that we've just dicussed that wasn't a dominant defensive team.

Getting back to the original question, that 1978 Washington Bullets championship team was made up of Elvin Hayes in his prime and a bunch has has beens and okay players. Yeah, Dandridge was good but, come on, he wasn't that great a player. He was more of a product of being an pretty decent player during a time when there just didn't seem to be a lot of great NBA players in the game at thetime. I'm pretty sure Hayes was the only All-Star on that team that year.

I think you're right that such "1-star teams" require excellent team defense and usually has other impact defensive players (like Bowen in '03).  Because defense isn't easily statistically defined nor is it as popular as offense, such players are rarely considered strong support.

And I don't think the Heat from '06 fit into this category.  That Heat team also featured a Shaq that averaged 20 and 9 and started in the All Star game.  Wade was brilliant that season, especially in the Finals, but that team doesn't at all count as a solo mission.

As far as PLAYERS, did the 1977 Blazers have anyone else other than Walton?

As far as PERSONS, Dick Bavetta in 2002 (technically that was the conference finals but everyone knew that series would determine the championship).

That Heat team had an entire starting five of game changers in the playoffs...

Wade, Shaq, and the three officials.
