The more I think about this -- there is zero chance this will happen. zero chance.

As big of a fan as I am of Steph, and the possibility for him to join the C's, I'd be outraged if this happen.

And I assure you as a season ticket holder I would flip out if this was even seriously considered.
God bless and good night!

I'll bet he will NOT ask for that number, out of respect for DJ and the fact its retired.  I'll bet Marbury will be careful about chemistry issues.

Why all the hate about this move?  Do you detractors actually think Danny would be trying to get him if any one of the Big 3 was against it?  I have confidence in this team and if the leaders of the team think its worth a shot - FANTASTIC, GO GET HIM DANNY!!!!!!!!!!!

No way. Marbury would never get his number.  If he asked theyd say no, and we'd never hear about it because they wouldnt let the media in on it.

If we didnt unretire 21 for Garnett, why would we unretire a number for a mid-season rental in Marbury.

He wouldn't be the first member of his family to try and wear a retired Celtic number

Boston Herald:
Quote
Recently acquired point guard Sebastian Telfair wants to ask Celtics legend Cedric Maxwell to request that the Celtics unretire his jersey number 31.

Telfair has always worn the number because he’s from 31st Street in Brooklyn, but the number was retired by the Celtics in Maxwell's honor.

“I just got his phone number,” Telfair said. “I’m going to call him.”

Marbury might ask the Johnson family permission and donate to a charity in his name. Not to say he'll be granted permission but it's worth discussion.

I am now convinced that he will pick #8

it would be poetic really - who else has polarized Celtics Nation like Toine?  Steph steps right into that role.

Well, all an "8" is is a "3" looking at itself in the mirror, right?

I would be ok with it if DJ's family says its ok. He was a celtic and I believe that any of the greats that wore green would want the team to bring home a title more than worrying about their number. I could be wrong but I believe that he would be ok with this if he were alive today.

The purpose of retired numbers is because the number is equivalant to what the special player brought to the table. In other words no one will ever be able to add to the Celtics what DJ and the rest of the retired numbers brought to each respective team/championship. Hence numbers are retired and never to be used again.

Also Marbury couldn't hold DJ's jock strap

There is a difference, though.  Max was still alive.
In any case, I would be flabbergasted if Marbury asked for, let alone ended up with, #3.

My prediction:

He will wear #30 in honor of his awesome cousin, Bassy.

Plus, they will reshoot that commercial with the Lucky cutout where he says that he wants a Biiiig Stephon Marbury Night at the Gahden.

Boston Herald:

“It’s a personal fit for where I’m going,” said a cryptic Marbury, who said his only reason for the request was that it fit his desire for a fresh start.

“(No. 3) was not even a thought for me,” he said of the number he has worn since his earliest years as part of a family tradition with his four brothers.
