Moore brings length and outside shooting off the bench. That's exactly what the Celtics need. Moore plays a different game than Baby and Powe. This contrast is exactly what the C's need. will Moore pick up his game to the level we need? That question will remain to be unanswered until we see him play. However, mark me down as being optimistic as to what Moore will bring.

How much will it suck if Joe Smith is bought out and he signs with Cleveland?  :P

This move is as much about the short term as adding a vet for the playoffs.  Who knows if Moore can turn into that vet, but in the next 10+ games, maybe more, muscle strains heal slowly sometimes, the C's needed another big off the bench.  Since they cleared out POB and had his spot, with the KG injury, picking up Mikki was a no-brainer.  This was not a multiple choice move of who is the best PJ clone for the playoffs between Moore and Smith, this was a move to address an immediate need, that may or may not pay dividends down the road.

If the C's believe they still need more punch for that playoff vet off the bench, they still have one roster spot and could create another one if they really wanted whichever player was available.  Once KG went down, sans a 10 day contract player which Doc rejected, the simple reality is the Celts needed another big body right now to stay afloat in the meantime.  The move needs to be seen in this light.  If Smith and/or Marbury become available and Doc and Danny believe they are both essential as the playoff vets, they can pursue both of them at that time.

yeah, but Joe Smith also brings those things and he's better rebounder too....

so, first we need to know if this is true, but second we need to see what happens with Smith.

if he doesn't get bought out, then this signing looks better.

I don't know why Joe Smith is extremely desired on this site. He's a solid role player. However, under the right circumstances I don't see how Smith is better than Moore. Let's put Smith in the Posey category of most overrated players on celticsblog.

Agree 100%.  He's one of the worst first round draft choices ever made (along with LaRue Martin and Michael Olowokandi) and has become the NBA equivalent of Suitcase Simpson.

he's better than Moore at every phase of the game which is really the only thing that matters.

is the love he's getting here commensurate with his abilities? probably not. but we're trying to win a Title, so any difference in skill level could be the difference.

I hope so. But why should we expect that? The man has been a sieve all his career and suddenly he becomes a good defender?

Moore's problem was never lack of effort or hustle. Just lack of talent.

Yeah but on the same token when did Eddie House, Ray Allen, or Paul Pierce ever make the All Defensive Team. All three of these guys throughout their careers have been known as offensive players but look what happened this year and last. Sometimes all it takes is effort, hustle, and the right system. Oh and having KG does help too.

I for one think this is exactly the type of defensive minded backup center we need.

Moore isn't a defensive minded center, though.  He blocks shots at lower rate than Brian Scalabrine, and allows opposing centers to shoot 60.9% against him.  Last season, he led the entire NBA in personal fouls.  He's a poor defender, much worse than Smith.

Quote
Mikki has length, he has playoff experience guarding centers...

What playoff centers has he guarded?  He's only been in the playoffs twice, and he matched up against P.J. Brown (and got swept), Andrea Bargnani, and Big Z (and lost that series).  It's not like he has a stellar track record.

I will agree that Moore plays hard.  He definitely does that.  However, he's just not that talented, especially on defense.  (Offensively, at least he's very efficient.)

Seems to me his defensive effort against Chris Bosh was one of the main factors in NJ's upset win over Toronto that year.  He wasn't matching up on the perimeter orientated Bargnani.

I like that he drew the assignment to cover the other team's best player, a guy who by all rights should have dominated him, and he shut him down for an entire playoff series.  That is the kind of player I want playing backup center for this team.

The Celtics should have traded whoever they had to for Joe Smith and James Posey. According to this blog, if we had Smith and Posey in the line up we could have went undefeated this year.

What are the C's options if this deal goes?
Is Moore's contract the vet min?  Can he be cut with no penalty if we choose to go after another player (Joe Smith).

A lot of people are talking about this as if it could result in missing out on Joe Smith if he were to become available.  It is all so confusing.
