Miles signed for rest of season
Associated Press

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The Memphis Grizzlies signed forward Darius Miles for the rest of the season Friday.

The forward has averaged 5.7 points in 12.1 minutes in 10 games with the Grizzlies this season as he returns from microfracture surgery on his right knee. Memphis signed the seven-year veteran as a free agent on Dec. 13 and waived him Jan. 7.

The Grizzlies re-signed him Jan. 10 to a 10-day contract two days after Portland threatened possible legal action against any team signing the free agent. Miles' return put the Trail Blazers on the hook for $18 million and the two years left on his contract.

Memphis also signed Miles to a second 10-day contract on Jan. 20.

The 27-year-old Miles was the third overall pick in the 2000 draft by the Los Angeles Clippers, and has also played for Cleveland, which traded him to Portland midway through the 2003-04 season.

Does that money come off Portland's cap in 2010 or 2011?

I don't think Portland really cares about this.  They're already on the hook for the remainder of his contract.  But this is good news for Miles.

The fact that they've signed Miles for the rest of the season pretty much proves that their intentions were always around Miles being able to help them, not that they just wanted to hurt Portland.  Any prayer that Portland *might* have had regarding a lawsuit (very little to begin with) is basically shot at this point.

I am happy for Darius. Everybody deserves a second chance and he is really doing well in Memphis

Yeah.  If Miles blows his knee out again this season, Portland will have the right to declare him medically unfit to play again, and thus get some cap relief next season.  That's there only continued interest in Miles.
