I love this deal, regardless of the money. Having Tek for another 1-2 years is perfect for the Sox. Whatever you want to say about his hitting, he is still an excellent defensive catcher. I think everyone is in agreement that he needs to be playing less, and I am sure that will happen. Having him here to work with the pitching staff, keep some continuity in the clubhouse, and most importantly work with a young catcher (TBD) to ease them into the starting job, will be so important.
This also gives the Sox a whole lot more leverage when looking to trade for a young catcher. They also can try to hold out for Mauer in two years. It just gives them so much more flexibility.
I really like the way the Sox have spent their money this year to build depth, rather than just throwing a ton of money at a couple regular guys. This team is built for the long haul, and this is just another move that solidifies that.
