Jason Varitek is on the verge of agreeing to a two-year deal with Boston, SI.com has learned. The two sides have come to an agreement.

Just need to wait for the numbers.

Well, I'm gonna hold out comment until the numbers are released but I'd hate to see anything more than $5 million/year with club option for Year 2.

Mazz has one year with an option no word on money yet.
"Let me call him," Floyd said.

The man shook his head. "O.J. doesn't give out his cell," he said. "He'll call you."

Jason Varitek and the Red Sox have agreed to a one-year contract with an option, a baseball source confirmed to the Globe's Tony Massarotti.

Varitek will earn $5 million in 2009, with the club holding a $5 million option for 2010. If the Red Sox do not pick up that option, Varitek has the choice of remaining with the club on a $3 million deal. In '10, he can earn another $2 million in incentives based on playing time, beginning at 80 games started.

Thus, the potential total value of the deal increases from $8 million-$10 million to $10 million-$12 million. The incentives apply to both the team and player options for 2010.

It seems as if there's an additional $2mm on the table for next year if he plays 80+ games, other than that it's still the same deal.

I love this deal, regardless of the money.  Having Tek for another 1-2 years is perfect for the Sox.  Whatever you want to say about his hitting, he is still an excellent defensive catcher.  I think everyone is in agreement that he needs to be playing less, and I am sure that will happen.  Having him here to work with the pitching staff, keep some continuity in the clubhouse, and most importantly work with a young catcher (TBD) to ease them into the starting job, will be so important.

This also gives the Sox a whole lot more leverage when looking to trade for a young catcher.  They also can try to hold out for Mauer in two years.  It just gives them so much more flexibility.

I really like the way the Sox have spent their money this year to build depth, rather than just throwing a ton of money at a couple regular guys.  This team is built for the long haul, and this is just another move that solidifies that.

What I don't like about this is this:  It puts Varitek at odds with a new catcher coming in, so instead of mentoring a new catcher it puts him in competition with a new catcher.

I guess I am less disappointed since it is the deal that was originally discussed.  I think the Sox overpaid, but I think it was a smart overpay.

The 2 million in incentives for 2010 will likely be met unless Tek continues to suck (unless of course the sox pull off a trade for one of the rumored young catchers)

Very good deal for both sides but I would like this deal even more if they had a young stud of a catching prospect behind Tek so that he could see Tek's preparation and style of handling pitchers and emulate it.

Hilarious, that he could have accepted arbitration and gotten a one year deal worth more than his two year deal can be. Classic Boras, for all the big deals he gets done, he messes up without it being a big deal.

Right now Manny might like to be playing for 20 million next year in a RS uniform.

Yeah, I feel bad for Tek a little, but it is always fun to laugh at Boras.
