There are times we think we can drive, we think we are okay enough to drive, but most likely we are not.  I drove drunk late late one night last summer.  I wasn't in a residential area, my friend lives in a secluded woodsy type area.  Anyways, did 2 no no's.  1) I was drunk 2) I was on my cell phone.  I dropped my cell phone & being drunk, my reflexes were slow as I reached down to pick it up, I was bombed that I didn't know there was a curved turn in the road & nailed a telephone pole head on.  I had no seat belt on, my car was trashed.  It is a typical human lesson, you don't really learn until something happens to you.  If you can get away with drunk driving at least once, you will keep doing it until A) you get caught or B) get into an accident.  It sucks that I had to learn my lesson like that, but i look back & realize that it could have been worse. I could have killed someone, had it been early enough in the evening, also if there were actually more people around that area, or even killed myself.  Luckily, the only damage was a totaled car & I only ended up with a bruised knee & a cut on my nose. I just attribute this to the fact that I was drunk, didnt even know I was heading towards the pole, because I was concentrating on picking up my fone & was so slow to react, my body didnt tense up, so it was able to absorb the impact better.  I have never driven drunk since.  I know I should have known better even before the incident happened, but its better late than never to learn.

Wow, so you avoided getting arrested though? No damage to the pole? Cops didn't come?

The cops came.  Someone called them.  The pole was snapped in half...literally.  I honestly don't know how the heck I came out alive.  Basically, the cops came, they called a rescue.  At the time, I didn't have health insurance because I was fresh out of college, could no longer be on my parents' coverage due to me being above whatever the cut off age is.  I think they knew I had been drinking, but they didn't make me do a field sobriety test. Also I think I kind of sobered up after I hit that pole.  My BAC obviously didn't decrease, nor did it remove the smell from my breath, but I definitely was more alert when the cops came.  Also, in retrospect, I probably didn't get seriously injured because I was so intoxicated, my body didn't tense up, thus what could cause more injury...I was able to absord the impact easily. Anyways, I rejected the care of the EMT's because I certainly couldn't foot the bill myself.  My car was trashed, got towed away.  I told the cops my front driver side tire burst & I lost control of the vehicle, thus causing me to go into the pole, because I hopped a curb then slammed into the pole & my tire was shredded.  I was issued a ticket for going into the oncoming lane of traffic (luckily it was late & nobody was on the road).  I just went home & recuperated for a few days. Went to court a few months later, paid the ticket, end of story.  Haven't driven drunk since.  Some people have just got to learn the hard way.  I could have said, "Yeah, the cops didn't arrest me, so I can clearly get away with this."  But, just the loss of my vehicle at that time was enough to never do it again.  Don't get me wrong, I still go out sometimes, get drunk, but I am sure to stay whosever house I may be at.  And if I'm in a public place (restaurant/bar) I make sure to know my limits, and if I do feel a little woozy, I will stop, have some water, and just chill until I fully know I'm ok.

i have. when i was younger.i can't believe i did. so crazy. so wrong. so reckless. i'm in my 30's now and can't believe how many people leave a bar that are at least clearly over the limit.i know that having one or two extra putting you over the limit PROBABLY won't cause anything but who cares about probably when it's someone you love that gets killed.

tp for the topic and tp to my fellow teetotalers and everyone else with the basic sense to oppose and avoid drunk driving... yes i went through every page and i hope i didn't miss anyone.

as for the cell phone stuff. do they actually have data showing people having been on cell phones while in an accident? it seems to me that most people wouldn't admit to being on a phone.

i'm not saying that it's a good idea to talk on the phone while driving, but i really doubt it's as bad as alcohol.

i've gone through several articles on the subject that supposedly proves that cell phone use is as bad or worse than drunk driving. what they do is monitor the person driving... usually in a simulator, which is very different from actual driving. they then assess how well they drove by asking them questions like what they might recall seeing while driving. if they fail to remember seeing a certain car or sign, then their "chances" of getting into an accident go up. they also monitor eye tracking. this is a strange method of study. imagine you're taking a driving test with this eye tracker strapped to your head. you're gonna do a better job of looking at what you're supposed to. but then when you get drunk or talk on the cell phone you going to forget about the eye tracker and your eye placement will normalize. this is mostly my feeling on the subject. if anyone knows better or works with eye trackers, please enlighten me.

researchers can't actually put people into a situations where the real danger of an accident exists and therefore i don't trust all these studies. i think it's mostly just a craze right now that allows researchers to easily get grants cause it looks so great in the media. cell phones as bad as drunk driving!

that being said, it's probably a better idea not to use a cell phone in the car.

Right. It's a good idea not to use a cell phone in a car.

But trying to equate it with driving drunk is a cheap attempt to rationalize the latter.

0 drinks for me. I'm 26 and I only drink when I know I don't have to drive. Pardon me, but I have a very strong opinion on drinking and driving: it's bleeping retarded.

I don't want to be a potential killer. No thank you.

Q: Jsaad, is this the "hottest" thread in your Celticblog career?

A: No, but it is getting close in the length department. My #1 thread had 14 pages and 9542 views, this topic has reached 12 pages and over 2800 views.

Q: Well, what about in terms of "shelf life"?

A: I couldn't have done it without you Gabe! 3 1/2 months baby!

How's this for Celtic talk???

I'm just curious how many people here will be honest And to see how good or bad I am (or was, I should say) myself...
I'm in the guilty portion of this thread.  However, let me preface it by saing that I'm also 47 years old and was driving when the drinking age was 18 (but have not driven under the influence since my early 20's).  I also had two other influences going at the same time, I was in the NAVY and lived in the south. Back then, it was not frowned upon near as much as now.

Now, even if I have a beer when out at dinner with the family, my wife drives home.  One thing I have yet to understand, is how people can still drive while under the influence.  I'm a 20 year volunteer FF/EMT and I keep seeing the wrecks caused by drunk drivers.  One of these days, people will wake up.

30 people 9 or more. Wow.

Not to speak for others (or even, ironicall, myself, as I don't recall how I voted), but drunk driving didn't used to be a big deal. I can remember my mom getting phone calls from cops who pulled my dad over for drunk driving and having her pick him up from wherever he was pulled over, drive him home and go back for the car in the morning. I was in my 20s when they first started to crack down on DUIs. There was a judge (in Hingham, I think) who was all over the news because he was actually punishing people for their first (or 2nd or 3rd) offenses. Times change.

"It didn't used to be a big deal" <- doesn't mean it was less dangerous back then.

Of course it doesn't. Nobody said it did. That wasn't my point. People back then weren't indoctrinated on the evils of drunk driving from an early age back then. People seem to be judging behavior of a generation or two ago by today's standards. I was just trying to explain this.

Lots of things were done back then that were unsafe. Cars had lap belts for seat belts (no shoulder straps) in the front seats and many had no seat belts at all in the back seats. I don't ever remember seeing car seats for  babies or toddlers. How many of the people on this board who make comments like yours have spent time lecturing their parents or grandparents for risking the lives of their children or grandchildren on a daily basis? Because clearly they did.

The problem is drunk driving is like speeding. Some people go 5 mph over the limit and some people go 75 in a school zone. Being just at the legal limit for BAC is probably no more dangerous than using a cell phone while driving but statements like that go against the prevailing propaganda on the subject.
