There are times we think we can drive, we think we are okay enough to drive, but most likely we are not. I drove drunk late late one night last summer. I wasn't in a residential area, my friend lives in a secluded woodsy type area. Anyways, did 2 no no's. 1) I was drunk 2) I was on my cell phone. I dropped my cell phone & being drunk, my reflexes were slow as I reached down to pick it up, I was bombed that I didn't know there was a curved turn in the road & nailed a telephone pole head on. I had no seat belt on, my car was trashed. It is a typical human lesson, you don't really learn until something happens to you. If you can get away with drunk driving at least once, you will keep doing it until A) you get caught or B) get into an accident. It sucks that I had to learn my lesson like that, but i look back & realize that it could have been worse. I could have killed someone, had it been early enough in the evening, also if there were actually more people around that area, or even killed myself. Luckily, the only damage was a totaled car & I only ended up with a bruised knee & a cut on my nose. I just attribute this to the fact that I was drunk, didnt even know I was heading towards the pole, because I was concentrating on picking up my fone & was so slow to react, my body didnt tense up, so it was able to absorb the impact better. I have never driven drunk since. I know I should have known better even before the incident happened, but its better late than never to learn.
Wow, so you avoided getting arrested though? No damage to the pole? Cops didn't come?
The cops came. Someone called them. The pole was snapped in half...literally. I honestly don't know how the heck I came out alive. Basically, the cops came, they called a rescue. At the time, I didn't have health insurance because I was fresh out of college, could no longer be on my parents' coverage due to me being above whatever the cut off age is. I think they knew I had been drinking, but they didn't make me do a field sobriety test. Also I think I kind of sobered up after I hit that pole. My BAC obviously didn't decrease, nor did it remove the smell from my breath, but I definitely was more alert when the cops came. Also, in retrospect, I probably didn't get seriously injured because I was so intoxicated, my body didn't tense up, thus what could cause more injury...I was able to absord the impact easily. Anyways, I rejected the care of the EMT's because I certainly couldn't foot the bill myself. My car was trashed, got towed away. I told the cops my front driver side tire burst & I lost control of the vehicle, thus causing me to go into the pole, because I hopped a curb then slammed into the pole & my tire was shredded. I was issued a ticket for going into the oncoming lane of traffic (luckily it was late & nobody was on the road). I just went home & recuperated for a few days. Went to court a few months later, paid the ticket, end of story. Haven't driven drunk since. Some people have just got to learn the hard way. I could have said, "Yeah, the cops didn't arrest me, so I can clearly get away with this." But, just the loss of my vehicle at that time was enough to never do it again. Don't get me wrong, I still go out sometimes, get drunk, but I am sure to stay whosever house I may be at. And if I'm in a public place (restaurant/bar) I make sure to know my limits, and if I do feel a little woozy, I will stop, have some water, and just chill until I fully know I'm ok.
