"It didn't used to be a big deal" <- doesn't mean it was less dangerous back then.

Of course it doesn't. Nobody said it did. That wasn't my point. People back then weren't indoctrinated on the evils of drunk driving from an early age back then. People seem to be judging behavior of a generation or two ago by today's standards. I was just trying to explain this.

Lots of things were done back then that were unsafe. Cars had lap belts for seat belts (no shoulder straps) in the front seats and many had no seat belts at all in the back seats. I don't ever remember seeing car seats for  babies or toddlers. How many of the people on this board who make comments like yours have spent time lecturing their parents or grandparents for risking the lives of their children or grandchildren on a daily basis? Because clearly they did.

Comparing car seats and lap belts to driving drunk?

This board needs a "shakes head in amazement" emoticon ...

If I used emoticons I'd be searching for "the previous poster  didn't understand the point I was making" one.

Edit: Perhaps I also need a "what the previous poster said while I was typing" one.

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth will be charged Wednesday with killing a pedestrian last month while driving drunk in Miami, according to people familiar with the case. . . .

Two people said an arrest warrant charging the 28-year-old Stallworth with DUI manslaughter will be filed Wednesday in the March 14 accident that killed 59-year-old Mario Reyes. The people requested anonymity because the charges haven't been announced.

The charge carries a possible 15-year prison sentence. Stallworth's blood-alcohol level after the crash was .12, well above Florida's legal limit of .08, according to results of a blood test. Stallworth will also be charged with DUI, according to the people informed about the case. . . .

The [police report] quoted Stallworth as saying he flashed his lights at Reyes in an attempted warning and that Stallworth was driving about 50 mph in a 40-mph zone.

It's too bad that there's a maximum 15 year sentence for wanton and reckless homicide in Florida, in my opinion.  People like Stallworth and Leonard Little should be rotting in a prison cell.

These are the real-life consequences of people who claim that "buzzed" driving is no big deal.  A .12 isn't falling down drunk by any stretch of the imagination, but somebody is dead because of it.

I can't say "I never drank alcohol", since I never have, but I certainly hate it, so I definitely haven't driven drunk, and I'd like to think I never will.

Then again, I don't have a car yet, either.  :(

as for the cell phone stuff. do they actually have data showing people having been on cell phones while in an accident? it seems to me that most people wouldn't admit to being on a phone.

Here are a couple of links about the effects of driving while on a cell phone, and what some state governments are doing about it:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-10784_3-6090342-7.html

http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/2009-03-29-driving-distracted-cellphones_N.htm

I've got a friend that works in the car insurance biz, and he figures within 5 years talking on a cell phone is going to be driving violation in every state.  They are already getting briefed on how it will change driver liability in an accident.

I know for me, the closest calls I've ever had behind the wheel where when I was using a cell phone.  Anything that takes your mind off of driving when you're behind the wheel is incredibly dangerous.  Granted, I haven't been blackout drunk behind the wheel since I was a kid.  That is a different story completely.  But if I was given a choice of being on the interstate with a bunch of people with a .12 BAC, or a bunch of people on cell phones, I'll take the drunk people.

Great response.  Do you have to get off your high horse to post on CB, or do you use wireless?

Why is that defending criminals? If I said that armed robbery was worse than stealing cars I don't think I'd consider myself to be defending car thieves. There's nothing wrong with adding a little perspective to a subject.
