i really can't see him going to boston. however, i'm tired of players saying how hard it is to be a millionaire ("i don't want to relocate my family," blah blah blah).

I don't care how much money you make, uprooting a family, especially kids, and moving them from their friends, schools, possibly relatives, and familiar surrounds isn't easy for anyone. Money or no money.

Probably just as tired as I am of people making comments like that about some millionaire.

Ever since I heard of the trade I have wished for McDyess because I remember how great he played during the playoffs.  He'd be great coming off the bench or if KG gets hurt.

I read tgrough all of these posts this morning then I went to the New York Post and read Peter Vecsey's column from yesterday

http://www.nypost.com/seven/11072008/sports/moresports/no_dyess_in_denver_137535.htm?page=2

After you read this ask yourselves if you still want a guy like this on this team?  I don't question his needs for  his family but it sure looks like a pattern here and I wonder how he would fit with our veterans and how he would come across to the kids.

20 minutes ago I was wishing/hoping for him.....  now?  I'm not so sure anymore although I would think Danny would know best.

It may hinge on how much of his salary Denver will pay in the buyout.  I imagine the Celtics and Pistons are the only two teams with a chance at getting him. I don't like how traded players can circumnavigate the rules and go back to the team that traded them in the first place.

thought I would link to set my record straight.

"If McDyess, 34, negotiates a buyout with Denver of the last two years of his contract, he would have to sit for 30 days before he could rejoin the Pistons because of the so-called Gary Payton Rule."

So that would make a lot of sense for him to take a month off, and re-sign later.  Nice move for Detroit.  Remember that we were the team that p---ed off the league the most with this kind of move, when ainge figured a way to trade Gary P and keep him for a playoff run.

"You're skating on pretty thin ice around here, McGee!"
"Sounds like the ice's problem."

I don't think the Celtics are going to end up with McDyess a month from now but if anyone can convince McDyess it's going to be Danny Ainge.

If McDyess does sign for us he'll be going back on his own "ring-chaser" comments and effectively truly becoming a "ring-chaser" but then again, his circumstances have changed...

MCDyess is no fool. He must realize he can't win a ring going back to Detroit.  He can with Boston.  Hope KG patches things up with him.

Who would we cut?  Giddens? Sam? Gabe? Someone would have to be cut or traded.

Hope Danny can make it happen. They should change the rule so if you're traded and bought out you can't sign back with the team that traded you for the rest of the season.

Detroit falling apart in the next few weeks might make McDyess sour on the Pistons.

I also don't see why a player would resign for less with the team who traded him. He could lose millions because they decided to trade him. Why give them the good deal?

He should go to the contender that will pay him an acceptable amount. It will only be for 8 months anyway.

This from Billups in yesterday's press conference regarding McDyess and his possibly not wanting to go to Denver:

Quote
"You don't come back to a city twice on your own will if you don't like that city," Billups said. "He loves Denver. He loves the organization and things like that. He's in a position where he has a decision to make. He's in the latter part of his career and he's tired of moving and tired of being in these kinds of situations. So, it's kind of up to him. I'm going to support him in any way he goes."

Since I am guessing a longtime team mate of McDyess' would know better than anyone else, reading into what Chauncey said, it seems clear that McDyess' problem is uprooting at the moment:

"He's in the latter part of his career and he's tired of moving and tired of being in these kinds of situations."

If that is an accurate statement as is this about chasing titles:

Quote
"That will probably be it for me," McDyess said of likely retiring in 2010. "I don't know if I want to be a chaser (for a title)."

http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/mar/28/tomasson-title-still-elusive-to-mcdyess/

I don't see Antonio McDyess coming to Boston for a couple of extra bucks when right now home and family is in Detroit. If he forces his way out of Denver, I would think based off the above quotes that McDyess will sit out a month and head back to Detroit. Chasing him will be the equivalent of chasing Brent Barry last season, talk all you want he is returning to his old team.

This is certainly the prevailing factor that may prevent Boston from getting him, but McDyess also has other priorities in his life.

Boston can offer him the remaining 2.3 mill from this year's MLE and the full MLE for next year if they wanted to. This represents nearly 8 million in total salary, which would likely more than replace his buyout money - in essence, he'd make money coming here beyond what his original 2-year deal was.

Secondly, McDyess would have a role here of significance. He'd be seeing at least 20 minutes a night behind Perk, and often more. This wouldn't be a "ring chaser" gig for him, but a legit opportunity to contribute to a title.

Third, McDyess is still going to take advice from his agent and Ainge is very persuasive when selling his perspective on the situation and opportunity the Celtics provide. Ainge will have a sit down and get a chance to paint the full picture - which gives him a distinct edge over most teams.

Which brings us to Boston's reputation. The field is clearly limited to contenders and McDyess would prefer not to up-root. Boston is probably going to hang-in the longest when it comes to options because of their success and Ainge's past history courting McDyess.

It may not be enough to convince him, but its certainly a powerful argument on all fronts and may be enough to tip the scales. Ainge can make a strong 2 year commitment, this year and next, because it is consistent with his short-term deal making. Ainge maintains flexibility for the FA market of 2010 and gets a productive vet big in the process, thus tipping the scales of power a little more Boston's way.

I think we have a legit shot at landing him, and the more that comes out the more it seems Ainge is going all-in to make it happen....3rd time's a charm? We'll see...

well argued as usual BB. i havent been around celticsblog much lately since my new job takes up a huge amount of the 24 hours in each day... but i havent seen your posts in a while.

glad you are posting again. thanks and a tp.

Why can't Detroit win a ring? What makes you think that the team that came one game away from winning the ECF and headed to the Finals is not in contention for another ring? Besides, that's his home and has been for a while. It makes little sense for him to just jump to yet another team when has an opportunity to go back to Detroit.

I'm not saying it wont happen, but what are the odds? I suggest you guys don't get your hopes up.

O, and to answer your question, Scal, Sam, or POB (it pains me to say that) I would hope.

If Danny could get McDyess, you'd think Scal will be the one to go. Gabe, Walker, Giddens, and POB all have upside. There is none is Scal.
