"It seems the team that is making the loudest noise in a potential McDyess lottery is the Boston Celtics, but just maybe one of those other teams with McDyess on the board is the Orlando Magic…kind of, sort of, maybe. Asked if Orlando was one of those clubs that had reached out to McDyess’ agent, Magic General Manager Otis Smith quickly shrugged off the possibility, indirectly citing how any such trade or deal set up to accommodate what’s left on his contract would rub up against the luxury tax. “It’s just that everybody sees a shiny new toy out there and they don’t want somebody else to play with it,” Smith said. “It’s a tough proposition because it’s not like he’s going to instantly give you 15 wins." If Ainge could convince MdDyess to sign here that would be huge.  Otis Smith is completely missing the point with his remarks.  The difference in outlook between he and guys like Ainge is exactly what separates the good from the best in the league.

Money may just be the biggest obstacle though.  I'm not sure the Celtics can offer him as much as other contenders.  Even the (gulp) Lakers have more to offer.  Although I'm not sure he'd fit in that crowded frontcourt there.

the more I hear about this the less I believe the Celtics have any shot because McDyess only has eyes for Detroit

Jeff, you're probably right but if you're McDyess, why wouldn't you listen to what Ainge has to offer?  Is money a major concern of his?  I ask because I know the Celtics don't have as much as other teams.

It may hinge on how much of his salary Denver will pay in the buyout.  I imagine the Celtics and Pistons are the only two teams with a chance at getting him. I don't like how traded players can circumnavigate the rules and go back to the team that traded them in the first place.

This from Billups in yesterday's press conference regarding McDyess and his possibly not wanting to go to Denver:

Quote
"You don't come back to a city twice on your own will if you don't like that city," Billups said. "He loves Denver. He loves the organization and things like that. He's in a position where he has a decision to make. He's in the latter part of his career and he's tired of moving and tired of being in these kinds of situations. So, it's kind of up to him. I'm going to support him in any way he goes."

Since I am guessing a longtime team mate of McDyess' would know better than anyone else, reading into what Chauncey said, it seems clear that McDyess' problem is uprooting at the moment:

"He's in the latter part of his career and he's tired of moving and tired of being in these kinds of situations."

If that is an accurate statement as is this about chasing titles:

Quote
"That will probably be it for me," McDyess said of likely retiring in 2010. "I don't know if I want to be a chaser (for a title)."

http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/mar/28/tomasson-title-still-elusive-to-mcdyess/

I don't see Antonio McDyess coming to Boston for a couple of extra bucks when right now home and family is in Detroit. If he forces his way out of Denver, I would think based off the above quotes that McDyess will sit out a month and head back to Detroit. Chasing him will be the equivalent of chasing Brent Barry last season, talk all you want he is returning to his old team.

Good post Nickagneta.  TP for you.  You broke that down really well, and I have to agree with you.  From McDyess previous statements about not wanting to chase a ring (by just hopping on a contender) I can't see him coming to Boston as that would be exactly against what he seems to sincerely oppose.  Sure Danny might try, but ultimately you're probably right.

What Danny would need to convince him of is that he WOULDN'T be a ring chaser, per se.  There's a difference between being the 12th man on a team and picking up a ring without really playing, and being a guy like PJ Brown was for us last year that was a real solid contributor and absolutely had a hand in our winning the title.  McDyess would be like that for us - coming off the bench, but playing crunch-time minutes.  That's not chasing a ring at all.

I think he goes back to Detroit, though.  Was it Stackhouse last year that ran his mouth and screwed up a trade?  The hope that we have is that he IS open to thinking about the alternatives, and that maybe he'd be receptive to a recruiting push from the boys.  Danny pushing hard to sign him a few years ago has got to be a positive as well; he knows that he'd be wanted here.

It's obvious that he's got a lot of reasons to want to stay in Detroit. I think Boston's chances all depend on McDyess's relationships (if any) with current Celtic players. I have no idea. But if he's got buddies or enemies on the team, it could have a big influence one way or the other.

As an Alabama fan as well, I love McDyess.  He's a class act and would be a perfect fit for a lot of our needs.  I just wonder how much of a chance we have if at all of landing him.  Danny has pulled through before.  He would certainly make a case for Executive of the Year again if he pulled it off.

He and KG have the same agent but allegedly haven't spoken to each other since a scrap a couple of years ago.  If someone can fill in the details better than that, go for it, but that's the gist as I remember it.

I don't think that would be the deciding factor in him not coming here though.
