I don't understand the dislike for Cassell. The guy is a pretty good third string point guard and a great mentor for the young guys.

Besides from the preseason it looks like he won't be getting any burn. I'm thinking we will see a backcourt combo of Pruitt and House with TA playing small forward. Between the three the ball handling should be covered.

First of all Sam did start complaining about his PT later in the year.

No, he didn't. You are trying to twist words which you have a habit of doing when it suits you.

Uhh...no he's not. Sam absolutely DID complain about playing time after he got here. Before the playoffs started there was a stretch where he didn't play and I distinctly remember him being quote as saying "I don't know why they brought me here if they didn't bring me here to play me."

I can't remember a link to the paper I read it in(either the Herald or the Globe) but don't get it twisted. Sam most certainly complained about minutes last year before the playoffs started.
Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity...

Personally I don't have a big problem with Cassell being on the team. I mean right now Rondo is out for a few days with a sprained ankle. Things happen.

I'm just wondering, why is it that he hasn't played a minute this pre season? What do you make of that? If he's in their plans at all, shouldn't he be playing some in these games? I understand that they want to give Pruitt and House work, but still, they play the big three at least some of the game. Something just seem odd that he hasn't gotten off the bench. How can he be ready if there is an injury?

Link?

because i don't remeber any such qoute, but if its so distinct, it should be avalaible at boston.com.

i belive what your refering to was the qoute i referanced, where he was asked

"do you want to play more minutes?"

and he said somethign like

"of course i do, but im here to help them win anyway i can. but do i want to play more? of course."

thats not complaining about minutes. thats stating the obvious. what NBA player would awnser that; "no, i hate playing. i enjoy the end of the bench, its relaxing."

on the other hand, positive things said about cassell are numerous.

"There are no questions or concerns about my role," he said. "None at all. I'm going to be the backup point guard and I will do whatever I can to be successful. With personnel like that, I just have to fit in and do my job."

http://www.boston.com/sports/articles/2008/03/05/cassell_knows_role_but_cant_act_right_away/

http://hoopsvine.com/index.php/sam-cassell-interview-with-hoops-vine.html

as well as an interview on Drive for 17 where rondo praised sam's ability to teach him vetran tricks and help him scout opposing PG's sam's seen for 10+ years.

I'll ask again, link me this article you distinctly remeber. because if were just throwing random stuff out thier to assasinate people's characte because we don't like them as players, i distinctly remeber BBD saying he likes to kick puppies in the jaw at practice.

I can't remeber WHERE i saw it, but don't get it twisted, he said it.

After a big Game 3 win, Sam decided it was a good time to voice his concerns about playing time to the media:

“It’s very frustrating,” Cassell said yesterday when asked if the lack of playing time was difficult to deal with.

“This is my first year (in the NBA) that I sat out in a playoff game,” Cassell said. “I didn’t get any playing time in four games. That’s my first time ever. It boggles not just me but anyone around, like, ‘Why’s he not playing?’ I’m not discouraged, but it’s tough, ain’t no lie. It was tough because I know I can play.

“All of this is brand new for me. I’ve never been in this situation before. I understand (it), and it’s a role that it takes time to get comfortable with. I’m not complaining about it, but it just takes time to get comfortable in the role.”

"I ain't going to lie, it was tougher because I knew I could play. I competed against these guys with my teammates, with other teams before in the playoffs, and had a lot of success. But me getting here late in the year, who knows?"

Playing Sam over House in the playoffs last year was probably Doc's worst move since he's been a coach for the C's IMO.  Why he switched a lineup that won 66 games is beyond me.  It's a new year though and now that Sam will know the offense he won't be relegated to pounding the ball on one side of court back to basket until the clock is about to expire and then jack up a fall away jumper.  Of course I've always felt that was the worst thing to do when joining a team with so many great players.  The Sam you saw is the Sam I saw his whole career.  That was the Sam that averaged 17 pts on a horrible Clippers team.  I'll concede that he's on the team and things might be different this year so for now this will be my last post concerning Sam and I'll root for him unless things change.

sooo to sum up the article (which i belive is the one im thinking of)

- he's upset he didn't play in a playoff game(natural)

- wishes he had played and helped (natural)

- goes out of his way to say he's not discourged or askign for minutes. for example:

I’ve never been in this situation before. I understand (it), and it’s a role that it takes time to get comfortable with. (note the "im still learning my role, and i understand it" the man was coming off being a starter for 15 years. it probley takes more than a month to not be itching to gt into a playoff game hmmmm?)

I’m not discouraged, but it’s tough, ain’t no lie.

which is exactly what i'd expect a guy to say after not gettign to help his team. notice he didn't say ANYTHING about how he should have played instead of someone/ gotten more time on the floor. he said he's ticked he didn't get to play and help.

the point of the article you qouted was : "yea, it sucks i didn't get to play, i understand my role, but its fustrating to get used to not being out there"

which is, ya know, exactly what i said he said.

and no where in it does he say "i better play next game or  i should have played 20 minutes!!!" or anything of the like "rondo isn't getting it done!" which is what you and EJ contend he did.

thanks for adding on to my point though....the anti-sam's was that he griped to get minutes, not that he was fustrated but ok with his role remeber?

and again, we are talking abotu a guy who, i frimly belive, will probley be in street clothes a good chunk of the time.

to me, he's an emergancy backup they want to keep around (and why not?) to teach the young guys.

lost in the anti sam reterick is that he was a pretty good player. if he can teach pruitt espically to play like he did back in hsi hay day from the 14th or 15th seat on the bench, great.

with all the hate this guy generates, you'd think he plays meanigful minutes.

Re check the posts I never actually said anything about him complaining about playing time.  I didn't want him here because he's awful.  I just provided you the quotes that are obviously him complaining about playing time no matter how you want to frame it.

I couldn't careless about him complaining but, please don't try to sell frustrated as not griping.

if by "frame it" you mean read it objectivly, then yes, even though im on recored as saying i'm anti- him getting any meanigful playing time, and saying he should be an emergancy backup in street clothes, i'm clearly a sam cassell fanboy bird. you've found me out  ::)

I should really stop trying to reason with the tide of anti sam cassell hate, facts and logic are meanigless in the face of

"OMG HE STINKS AND KILLS KITTENS!!!!! MUGURGLgurgleGURGLE!!!!

but...but he's the 14th guy on the ben...

" YOU"RE ALSO A KITTEN KILLER!!!!"

that goes on around here.  ;)

The appropriate response from Sam would have been : "Hey. we just won a big game. I'm not worried about playing time. I am here to win a championship. If that means playing fine. If it means sitting and cheering, then fine."

Not that garbage he threw out there that everyone knows means "I am too good to be sitting here on the bench".

That's absolutely not "twisting" anything. It is twisting to try and make his statement a positive team supporting attitude. Sam is out for himself first and his team second. That's Clipper mentality, not Celtics.

How about dropping the personal attacks soap07? When you disagree with something why not dispute the facts or comments instead of trying to take a jab at me? Maybe because you can't really dispute what I said?!

That's how these threads get out of hand. I could have made some remark back about your tendency to make poorly thought out comments in general on here when it suits YOU and then it all unravels. Argue the point, keep it about the point...

In a semi-related topic, does anyone know why Bonzi Wells doesn't have a job anywhere?

Other than the fact that he's had some personality conflicts at his other stops he would be the guy I hope C's look at to add some depth at SF.  It was pretty clear he could still play last year but, NO has Posey so he's not needed there.  Strange twist of fate if it worked out.

how on earth is that a personal attack?

if anything, your post is more personal orinted  than his....(though i find no personal attacks in either, just disagrement.)

but regardless, i think we should all take a deep breath, myself included and realize that we are discussing a player who will probley be in street clothes based on doc and danny's comments, or play limited minutes at best.

the sam cassell issue, for some reason, stirs up more horse doo than anything else ive seen on the blog.

breath everybody  :D

That's enough chipiness.  Stick to the topic and relax.  If you feel there is a personal attack, report it to a moderator.

I'm just surprised that no one needs him. There are a number of elite teams he could make better. Perhaps he's been on the market so long that his value has dropped below what he's expecting. I'm just surprised it's not a bigger story.
