I would have been thrilled had the Sox landed Sabathia, but see merit in the arguments made against him ( except for the playoff choking, as it's a very small sample size from a guy who probably wasn't at his peak from having overworked his arm getting his team into the playoffs ). I realize that the road of terrible MLB contracts is paved with washed out/up starting pitchers, and their is an incredible amount of risk in locking up an ace long term. That being said, if I were a Yankee fan, I'd thoroughly approve of doing whatever it took to get this guy.
Since the Sox have a dedication to being an elite team year in/year out without committing a huge sum of money to a top FA SP, I now more than ever am against trading a top pitching prospect for one of the Rangers backstops. None of them. I'm more for trotting out a worn down Tek, or even Brown/ Kottaras, than I am for parting with any of Bowden/Buch/Hagadone/ or Tazawa. Given the fragility combined with the importance of the position, I like strength in numbers.
Besides, should we sign Teixeira as rumored, a healthy Lowrie will be batting 8th for crying out loud. We can bury a weak hitting catcher at the bottom of the order and still have the best offense in the majors.
