Yea I dont know why people are so focused on speed of pitches.  It's like 40 yard dash in football, verticle leap in basketball,etc...

If you know how to use those skills then obviously the better the number, but if you cant use it, you will get hit.  just having a 100 mph fastball doesnt mean you will be successful.  just because you have a huge vertical (gerald Green) clearly shows you may not be a successful basketball.  And Bethel Johnson shows us being fast doesnt equal being a good wr in football.

do you remeber that kid Anderson from the tigers like 5 years ago who could throw 103-105, but was wild?

he was like the real life Vaughn from major league.

Juuuuuuuuussssst a bit outside!!! TP4U getting in the Major League reference. That and Slap Shot are easily the two funniest sports movies ever, at least IMHO.

I dont remember that, but I am trying to remember the name of this prospect that was around within the last 3-7 years.  Had like 4 plus plus pitches, but could not throw strikes.  I think he had something like 7-8 wild pitches in one inning (not Rick Ankiel, lol).  He was the number 1 prospect for like 4 teams but could never throw strikes.

Neighborgall?

yes exactly.  I just found the article.

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=jp-neighborgall050307&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

definitely worth a read.  funny, sad, etc...

Perfect example of a guy who has what is considered to be amazing pitches, but his inability to even remotely locate the pitches will effectively prevent him from ever being a big leaguer. Even with all of the walks, teams take shots on him, because if you could ever reasonably straighten him out, he would be dominant.  But he made DiceK look like the most precise pitcher ever.

exactly, actually. says he was part of a "how far can you throw it!" contest as the celebrity guest, and tore his bicep.

I know that it's a few pages back, but Derek lowe will NEVER be a RedSox again. Bank on it. Word is he's a lecher and a drunk that the FO despises. Plus he's what, 36? Let the Rangers give him a four year deal.

I wouldnt go so far as to say 100% no chance.  He is one of the better pitchers available who will not require huge amounts of cash.  Additionally, he has gone on record saying Boston is his first choice.

But, I have also read that the front office didnt want to resign him last time due to his partying (cheating) etc...I also dont think that the guy can come from the NL and be as good as he was there, so you are likely paying for a bit of fools gold.

only way i'd sign him is if he's willing to be the spot starteer/ middle relief pitcher, ala tavarez.

It'll never happen. There has to be at least a handful teams willing to give D. Lowe serious cash to be a #2ish guy going foward. The RedSox will not be on that list. Maybe it's not 100% as Ya'll states, but I'll bet it's in the high 90's.....

I actually like Wakefield, but who would you rather see starting games, Wake at 4 million a year or Lowe at 8-10?  I think I may lean towards Lowe.  And remember, he said Boston was his number one choice.

It all depends on contract length.  If it is 2 years, sign him up.  If it is 3 years, we can consider it.  If it is 4 years...welcome to Texas Derek.

Yea I agree.  I would like 2 years.

Barring a trade, or players not living up to projections, in 2 years we should have a starting rotation consisting of Beckett, Lester, Dice, Buch, Bowden.  So I am in no rush to give a long deal to an older player.  But something to bridge the gap till Buch and Bowden mature enough to fit in the rotation, sign me up.
