fair enough. I checked out their minor league stats and salty had pretty good minor league numbers like you said.

Texas is rumored to want bucholz or bowden though

would u do it if tek doesn't comeback??

either catching is definitely a premium position or the redsox haven't drafted properly

I would be willing to move Bowden...It wouldnt be something I was happy about but I would do it.  I dont think you can move Buch.  I think you could do the Bowden trade (with the expectation that which catcher you get, he is playing at AAA for at least another year).  I think you then pay the extra cash and grab Tazawa.  He would essentially 'replace' Bowden as a young potential stud prospect.

I heard on an EEI sportsflash this afternoon that the Sox and Pedroia are discussing a contract extension. That's encouraging. It may not be as sexy as netting one of the big fish, but getting players like Pedroia and Lester inked to team friendly deals like the one Longoria signed is arguably their top priority this offseason. Well, that and the catching situation.

Edit: Because I left out the word " not" which totally ruined my sentence.

looks like Holliday has been traded.  Glad we can stop discussing him.

Teixeira's $$ just went up.

Holliday is an enigma to me.  I truly think he'll be interesting to watch next year in the AL away from Denver.  Too big a risk in my book.

Pitcher's for sure with all the foul ground and fairly long length down the lines. I think it is listed at 330-335 or so but it plays and looks longer than that. Power alleys and straightaway center are fairly common but if I remember right night baseball in Oakland usually has a bad carry of the ball in that park.

Pitchers park, at night the air is very heavy and the ball doesnt carry at all. You have to crush the ball for it to get out of there, add in the fact that it has as much foul territory as it does. Holliday must not be happy, in his contract year he goes from the top hitters park to one of the best pitchers parks in baseball.

Well, I guess it's the ultimate opportunity for him dispel the theory that he's the poster boy for inflated Colorado offensive production.
Yup

I was glad to see Holliday get moved.  If we traded for him it probably would've included Bay and I just didn't want to see that happen.  In my opinion Bay is the better all around baseball player.
"Take this down," said O'Neal. "My name is Shaquille O'Neal and Paul Pierce is the (expletive) truth. Quote me on that and don't take nothing out. I knew he could play, but I didn't know he could play like this. Paul Pierce is the truth."

Maybe, but maybe he feels like they can catch the Angels in '09? They supposedly have some money to play with this offseason and could make a run at Furcal as well. That'd go a long way towards bolstering last years pathetic excuse for a lineup. The only guy I remember being the least bit afraid of facing last season was Jack Cust. It's a miracle they even won 75 games.

you guys must be happy holliday is off the market... for now.

don't forget a's can easily trade him mid season if they aren't going anywhere next year. Plus holliday won't resign with the a's thats for sure.

If holliday does well with the a's (top 5 in rbi's) by the trade deadline and redsox don't pickup texeira this past offseason, look for bay(won't be top 5 in rbi's thats for sure) and another prospect dealt for him. Bay has said he would like to inquire about a contract extension with the sox but i haven't heard anything about the redsox being interested back.

Bay and a prospect?  You really think Holliday is that much better than Bay, huh?  No concern about playing half his games in Coors Field over his career? (.357 Home & .280 away) I guess playing his homegames in the vaccum of Network Associates Coliseum (or whatever its called now) will prove just how legit he really his.

I just don't see the Sox giving up a free agency bound Bay and a prospect for a free agency bound Holliday in a mid-season trade.  Judging by Beane's track record in Oakland, if he knows he can't resign Holliday, he's going to get cheap talent and a mulitude of prospects in return, not another rent a player for a half season.

Just because there hasn't been a public report about the Sox being interested in an extension doesn't mean that they don't have interest.  We're also talking about a guy who has another year under contract.  Sox tend to take their time with these things and they got plenty of time.

It seems one of ESPN's resident experts haven't got  a clue what the Red Sox are going to do this off season. I think I like that.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&page=rumblings

Quote
RED SOX

WHAT THEY NEED: A catcher to (theoretically) replace Jason Varitek, a middle-of-the-order bat, a starting pitcher, a veteran reliever.

FREE AGENT WHO COULD TOP THEIR LIST: Mark Teixeira.

HOW THEY'LL SHOP: No team multitasks better than the Red Sox. So they could go in a thousand different directions. Teixeira? A.J. Burnett? Derek Lowe? Junichi Tazawa? Sure. They're all possible. But so is none of the above. They could bring back Varitek, or trade for one of those Texas catchers, or both. Or neither. But they'll start this game by trying to get their catching dilemma sorted out and then go from there. Or not.

2 rumors going around is that lugo can be traded to detroit for dontrelle willis or nate robertson and texas catcher prospect salty for bucholz, or masterson/prospect or bowden/prospect.

Ok first i really don't mind the lugo trade rumor. Both willis and roberson are coming off horrendous years and if we get either, both will be possibly the 5th starter/long relief/emergency starter. (left hand pitching help is always good)

Roberson - doesn't have any oustanding pitches but can be effective if his slider works. Better control than willis and cheaper signing a 3 year 21 mill last year

willis - can reunite back with beckett, lowell and henry and maybe gain some of the magic back he had with the marlins. His delivery method is a concern and teams are just sitting back now letting him frustrate himself with the inability to throw strikes with any of his off pitches. In addition his fastball has lost some zip making his off the plate offpitches ineffective

Second i sort of can understand texas intentions because they believe they are giving up a top prospect catcher so in turn they want some kind of pitching help in return. But the redsox i'm not sure what they want to give up for him??(chump change?)
I wouldn't give up masterson, but either bowden or bucholz should be let go if they really want this catcher.
