I'd never pretend to be a hip-hop afficianado (punk rock and so-called "alt-country" are more my thing) but here are my faves:

Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet (one of my top 20 favorite records of all-time; truly incendiary)

Mos Def - Black on Both Sides

Outkast - Aqemini

Run DMC - King of Rock/Raising Hell

Paris - The Devil Made Me Do It

Cyne - Evolution Fight

Beastie Boys - Check Your Head

Commmon - Be

Kanye West - Late Registration

Tribe and De La.

Lot of love for Bay Area in this thread, but no mention of Latryx. I don't have a lot of hiphop, but I've got The Album, and that's one of my absolute favorites.

Blackalicious' EP A2G should get a mention as well.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
I think its a pretty clear cut winner in Biggie's Life After Death

my favorites from the past 10 years:

Mos Def Black on Both Sides
Jay-Z The Blueprint
The Roots: Things fall apart
Talib: The Beautiful Struggle

And, for those of us who don't let mainstream popularity ruin a good album:

Ma$e-Harlem World

That album is awesome.

Seriously watch that. It will make your heart muscle happy.

Thought I saw it here but The Fugees The Score needs some love. In my mind there is not a better female lyricist EVER than Lauryn Hill. Queen Latifah comes close and her Black Reign album is Exhibit A. Both could rhyme, both could sing. But listen to Desparados or Family business off The Score and then tell me there's a female lyricist out there better. Her rhyme is like a verbal automatic weapon.
Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity...

de la soul's 3 feet high and rising ranks as my personal favorite.

Also I love almost everything Michael Franti has been involved with.
I love my kids, call me a sap - it's true.
