I used to work out at a GYM and played in a basketball League with Gerry Callahan (I won't disclose the GYM because he's still a member). Now mind you, I can't stand the guys "affiliations" and I won't get into here but I'm not the biggest fan of his show...

I pictured him to be a jerk... One of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.

Wow. I'm shocked. Callahan has to be my least favorite personality- in any medium. Keep in mind that I would consider myself to lean more conservative than not on most issues that I can't talk about on this blog. It's an odd feeling to agree with someone and want to punch them in the face at the same time. Somehow, Callahan has brought that out of me. I can't listen to the show. I'd surely cause an accident and I simply can't afford to buy another car at the moment.

So this is an act you say?

You're surprised that it's an "act"?  Its all about ratings.  Although I guarantee that in real life he has just as strong opinions as he does on the show, I am not surprised at all that he is a nice guy.  I have heard lots of people who have met him say he is a nice guy.

"Caller driven radio" my ________ .

Glenn Ordway perhaps understood the NBA in 1988, but all he is now is platitudes (defense wins championships) and "Guy Radio". I agree that Grande and Max do a fine job, but there is no one at that station who gives a [dang] about the Boston Celtics. Callers get on the air when nothing else is going on and who has an hour to wait on hold to talk to the guys who know less about the game than many of the callers?

I disagree, I don't think Ordway is an "expert" in any sport but I believe he possesses enough knowledge to bring in experts and have discourse. He is witty, intelligent, respectful and a modest family man. He has on-air chemistry with anyone you put next to him...

I don't care, hate WEEI all you want. D and C sucks, Dale and Holley are rump-swabs but I don't agree with the Ordway hate...

He is a great "actor" and he makes every "movie" he's in a better "flick". Although, not all of his "movies" are great. IMO

ok so you don't work for EEI or Intercom, is Ordway your daddy? or are you Ordway?  The show is bascially screaming, making fun of Michael Felger and complaining... again I listen, but it could be so much better. If you missed the Diehards on 1510 a few years back, you missed out on what real Boston sports radio could be

No really though I disagree, I think Ordway and Buckley are really good.

I worked in the same building as 1510 before they moved (1 van de Graaff drive, Burlington, MA) or went under. So I saw the "diehards" all the time, in studio and on the elevator with them. And BTW, maybe they didn't "get it" at the time but they were jerks... They thought they were rockstars man, straight up SMUG.

So spare me the 1510 lecture...

I think Buckley is one of the most annoying guest-hosts on any show.  I just can't stand his whole old time baseball schtick.  It may just be a generational thing though.  If I had grown up watching these players in the 60's, I would probably love him.

I also think that the biggest jerk, and unlistenable (yeah, I think I made that word up) guest host on any of these shows is Butch Sterns.  All the guy does is cut other guys off, and then whine and complain when someone else does the same thing to him ("can I finish??").  I think with a lot of the guys its an act, but he is the one guy that comes across to me like a total jerk, even when he is not on the air.

While I am at it, here is what I think of the other guys:

My favorites:

Dale and Holley - I love listening to these guys, because they are both knowledgeable without being blowhards.  They treat people with respect, and have very good discussions, really bringing out tangent points, rather than just yelling at each other.

Felger - I know he is not a fan favorite, but as far as contrarians go, he is the best, because he backs up his contrarians stances with cogent points.  I also just think he is funny.  He also happens to be the best football journalist (used loosely) in the Boston area, so that helps as well.

Sean McAdam - Most intelligent baseball guy out there.  He is the only baseball guy other than Peter Gammons, who I really trust to know what they are talking about, and like Gammons, always has something interesting (and funny) to say.

Tom E. Curran - Just a genuinely funny guy among a bunch of guys who just think they are funny.

Deossie - The only former player who actually seems completely prepared for shows.  He constantly gives very good insight to what its like to be a pro football player, and he also has very good knowledge on the other Boston sports (at times, he seems to be the most knowledgeable about the Celtics on the Big Show).


Everyone else fluctuate between somewhat entertaining to completely painful to listen to depending on the topic/day/who they are with.

amen and TP. Dale is a tool. I loved last week how Felger called him out all week for being such a suckup. You could almost picture Dale Arnold counting down the minutes until Felger was gone.

The Sox could pinch run Rich Garces for Ellsbury and Arnold will say "Caller, don't you think Terry Francona thought about all the options and did what was best for the team?" he is there because he will never, ever rock the boat or criticize anyone. That show was best when Michael Smith filled in for Dale, and he was there with Holley.

The reason I like Dale is because he is a very sane, rational, and balanced fan, in a world of over the top guys who take extreme opinions just for the sake of it.

Right now, he is pretty unique in Boston Sports radio, because he actually has a much more moderate view of most everything.  I tend to gravitate towards that, just because I am the same way.  I don't like to flip out over little things, or jump to conclusions, assuming that I know everything that the coaches know.  He will always criticize players/coaches/etc. but he doesn't go to the extremes that the others do, and he tries to discuss the critiques in a more civilized way, rather than just screaming out opinions as if they are fact.

I think there is a reason that there are very few guys like that in the sports media, because in a vaccuum, they are painfully boring.  However, I think you always need a guy like that to bring balance to some of the other lunatics on that station.

Dale is beyond rational. Dont get me wrong its nice to be able to reason on matters but Dale goes to another extreme where hes not allowed to have his own view most the time because he knows Holley can make him look like a fool if he steps over the line.Its almost funny because Holley has the power to lead Dale into agreeing with him (of course)on a topic then to turn it around on Dale and disagree with his similar view on it, just to make him look like a joke, then Dale once again sucks up and says something like "yeaa..thats right...i see your point"...you can even tell how fake Dale can be just by the way he laughs constantly for odd reasons, just to make him look even more like a suck up.Im sorry but Dale can be a wimp..Henry43 you said it too just how it is..Felger had him exposed BIG time last week so bad that i couldnt shut the radio off.
