Ugh...
Too many unproven and potential players in this roster to my taste. I suppose we're talking about an unguaranteed contract, right?
Eh, I see no problem with it, considering what else was out there this summer. I would rather they take a chance on a guy like Miles with a contract they can just buyout if it doesn't work out, but who could potentially be a top notch role player if he is healthy, than bringing in a veteran, who you know is going to be mediocre.
They can always find a way to get a mediocre veteran during the season, they might as well see if they can hit a homerun first.
Sure, I can see your point. But there were some better than mediocre veterans out there in the FA market - guys like Thomas, James Jones, even Elson or Pietrus or Delfino, etc. The problem is that if these gambles don't work, we'll only have truly mediocre veterans available to sign and fill the bench.
Anyway, if this is a non-guaranteed contract, I have no problem at all with this signing.
On Walter going overseas: I don't see that happening until Miles proves them he's healthy and still good enough to contribute. What if Walker signs for an overseas team and Miles is cut after the training camp?
Well, Pietrus and Jones were gone before the C's were actually on the market, because they were still waiting on Posey. I would have loved Thomas, but we have no reason to believe he would have considered coming here (or if we could afford him). I don't think we could have afforded to pay Delfino enough to keep him in out of Europe. Elson would have been nice though, I will give you that.
As for Walker, they can only wait so long. If they bring him to training camp, they need to either keep him, or they lose him altogether. Regardless, he was being looked at as a longer term project, rather than a guy who would help out this year, so even if Miles doesn't pan out, they would have been turning to Giddens, rather than Walker.
