Another boring summer day and time for a new topic. Be honest everyone...

What is your vertical, how tall are you, and can you dunk?

I got about a 30 inch vert (it was 20 a few months ago), I'm about 5'10 and can barely get the ball over to dunk (I've done it a few times though). Hopefully I'll still grow.

was this inspired by my comment that moon had a 47" vert, one inch short of mj? if so, you owe me a tommy point.

Lol, it actually wasn't, I was just thought of it. You can have a TP anyway, if it makes you feel better  ;D

why thank you.

as for the vertical leap.. i use to be able to jump (never measured it) but now i'm taller but i also badly sprained both ankles so i get no lift. i am interested in this air alert program to possibly get back some lift.

Become Legendary.

I'm 6'5", maybe 6'6" and my vertical is between 31-34 inches. I can do tomahawks with one or two hands. I can do all kinds of oops to myself, and on a good day I can dunk from 10+ feet out. I can also every once in a while throw down a nice reverse (I can always do a reverse, it's just not always a nice one).
I can touch rim from about 12-13 feet. Yeah, I glide like crazy. I can almost do a windmill, and I'm really, really close to doing a 360. And I'm still growing and constantly increasing my leaping ability.

I am 2 foot 6 but have a 9 foot vertical so I can dunk fairly easily.

Not saying you're lying... but these are the type of responses that I find hard to believe.

Oh, and welcome to the Celtics, JR!!

No problem. Even as I posted it, I said to myself, "Somebody's going to post, saying like 'No way, quit lying, ur a liar, stupd. U prbly jumpz like 2 inchz.'" But that's an exaggeration/distortion of what you said, and my post is understandably a little doubtful. But it's the truth. I'll try to record it and maybe post a video sometime soon.

I do not know how high I can jump, but what I do know is that I want to jump higher. It is one of the things I just can't seem to improve upon.

Ok: Some things that really helped me.

First of all, stretch a lot. If you don't know basketball stretches, look them up. Stretch before you play ball, and if it's near the middle of the day, try to stretch afterwards. If it's later in the day, just wait. Every night you want to stretch before you go to bed. This gave me 2-3 inches on my vertical very quickly. I was really surprised but it worked for me.

Wall sits. Stand with your back to the wall, and put your feet almost shoulder width apart, then crouch until you are in a full sitting position, like you're in a chair.
Make sure your hands are above your head or something, just not touching your legs. Stay there about a minute. I do this once a day, but you can do it every other day or whatever.

Calf raises. Stand with your legs, again, about shoulder width apart, and then slowly (not too slowly) stand up as high onto your toes as you can, and again slowly back down. Do this about 30-50 times, and see how tired your legs are. Use this to gauge how many you should do normally. You can do this every day, but I wouldn't recommend it until you've done it every other day for a while. It's a very hard workout to keep up every day. If you want an extra edge, do it on a set of stairs or some other object (I use textbooks if I don't have stairs) and go down below your natural standing point (you stand with the balls of your feet on the object and then the back of your feet go below the edge of the object/stair step).

Also running, biking, and jump-roping help. Running stairs helped me, but that's really hard.

If you can, try to use a leg-press as well. They're pretty effective.

Hard work and diligence will get you there, man. Also trying to get as thin as you can (without becoming too thin, obviously) will also help. I'm naturally very (very, very, very) thin, so this process was a little easier for me than some people.

I'm a semi-lanky boston-irish dude around 6'1", almost 33 years old.  started dunking at 16 when I was 5'9", but not consistently.  started to really fly once i hit puberty and grew in college, catching lots of dunks in pickup.  I"m a one footed jumper, which is completely different from 2 footed jumpers, so my vertical isn't as high.   I can still dunk 2 hands 2 feet, but only on best days.  afraid i may have caught my last game-dunk in my life.

Tore the ACL 5 years ago, back to 100%, but age is kicking in.   its really sort of depressing for me.   Here's my formula.

1)  genetics - dad was a good athlete
2)  thin/in shape
3)  strong legs, abs, shoulders, ankles (shoulders give way more lift than you think)
4)   flexibility (read the other dudes post about stretching)

and lastly TRY TO DUNK if you are close.  dudes ask me at the gym how I have my hops and can dunk.   My reply, is "have you tried to dunk"?    the answer is always no.    How can you do something you've never tried or worked at?

Ouch, I hope your like 40 or 50. If not, just keep working and you'll get better.

I'm 6'3" with a 35" vert, the only problem I have with dunking though is palming the ball consistently. People work too much on their legs when trying to increase their vert, you need core strength to give your legs a solid platform to work with and to keep your body upright when you jump. You'll never touch your max reach if you're sagging in the middle.
We are in the right division. It's an amazing division. If you have three or four days off, you probably move up to first place. The key in our division is not playing right now.

6'1" 225 (wish it was pure muscle still!) When I was 20 it was in the 32" range but the problem my standing reach was only 90" I was right at the edge of dunking but never threw a basketball down. I could fairly easily jump up and hang two hands on the rim though, which made me pretty upset I couldn't throw one down. 2 foot jumper. Now at 37 yrs old I am lucky to nick the rim. I'm guessing that puts me in the mid 20's?! Boy it is fun to get old!
