doc's forte is certainly NOT player development. not by any stretch of the imagination. although this can be said about a number of coaches in the league (i.e. donnie nelson)
i won't say gerald green's failures are on doc's shoulders but i will say doc did nothing of significance to help him.
in his defense though, when you have essentially 14 19-23 year olds running around at practice, where do you begin?
so, just to check, gomes, jefferson, west, powe and rondo don't count as successes right?
we measrure only by gerald green and banks?
just want to make sure im on the same page with the anti-docs.
I'd say you've got it about right, crownsy.
Gomes, West, Powe, and Rondo already could play both ends of the court when they came on board. Their improvement came with playing time. Powe's defensive improvement came when Coach Ray came on board and continued under Ray and Thibodeau. Jefferson's and Perk's improvement came exclusively when Coach Ray came on board....Particularly their defensive footwork. None of them made significant defensive improvement beyond that because the only defense implemented (well, sort of implemented) while they were Celtics (pre Thibodeau as it applies to all of the Celtics) was the blitz...A junk, gimmick defense.
You could throw Telfair into this mix as well. I saw major improvements on both ends of the court under Wittman. I can't figure out why Telfair didn't do better defensively under McMillan. But he has under Wittman. So has Jefferson. I don't hold out a whole lot of hope for Gomes defensively. He's undersized for a four and too slow for a three and his footwork sucks as well.
To answer MLG5's final question....Well, you could start by implementing least a coherent defensive system to practice. Defensively, this team regressed significantly before Thibodeau. Especially their best player. So did the players. You have to have something in place. Saying "They need to play better defense" 82 times to Mike Gorman before games does not improve a defense. Whining that the defense was bad after a game doesn't either.
i won't say gerald green's failures are on doc's shoulders but i will say doc did nothing of significance to help him.The same could be said for every young Celtic.
wait so MLG5... you diss doc's coaching abilities, then you give him excuses? i don't know if you're for or against the guy. plus. why the hell does doc have to be a good player development guy? he has to run the team, not focus on an individual and develop their talents. thats for the assistants to do, and players to do on their own; example: cliff ray.He has to be a good player development guy because they had youth. He wan't running the team or focusing on the player's talents. This was the epitomy of a rudderless ship.
The fact that Danny put together an idiotproof roster with the NBA's best defensive coach doesn't change the obvious. Had the youth been developed at all, Danny wouldn't have had to trade half the roster and draft choices to get Garnett and Allen.
Telfair and the rest of the Celtics' youth deserved better.
