Agent Mark Bartelstein, who also represents House, said the Celtics are interested in another of his free-agent clients: forward Devean George, who averaged 3.7 points per game for the Mavericks last season. The 31-year-old George played on three Lakers title teams.

Good.  I'd rather hear they are interested in George than Finley, who I believe is DONE.

George will be looking for a team that offers him a rotation spot. I'm not sure he gets that here, with Tony back he probably shouldn't.

If he were signed I don't see him making much of a difference. I see Tony/Ray/Paul getting the minutes on the wings during the playoffs. Good insurance policy though.

Well, that's your defensively-oriented backup SF. The only problem is, George can't really shoot, so I don't see him stretching the floor much.

Ugh. There's a fork sticking out of George's back too. He's only good for about 8-10 minutes a night at this point.

I thought Giddens would play SF.

Among the "veteran and experienced defensive-minded SFs", George is probably the one with more left in the tank - unfortunately, this doesn't say a lot. Not sure if he adds much at this point though.

I hope we improve our big men situation during the season, if we indeed sign George.

Yeah, there in lies the problem.  We go from having the 2/3 spot backed up by Posey, who can spread the floor, to having it backed up by two guys in Allen and George, who can't.

And don't underestimate the importance of that.  Part of the reason that Doc could get away with lineups of House, Pierce, Posey, Powe, and Brown was because Posey could spread the floor.  If you throw George or Allen in there instead, you add one more player on the defensive end who can leave his man and pack the middle of the floor.

False - Posey backed up the 4/3 spots, not the 2/3 spots. FYI - he played more minutes at PF than SF.

For the record, Ainge stated in his last interview that he didn't think that the line-up with Posey at the 4 worked very well for us.

Posey was basically the only backup at the 2 and the 3 during the playoffs.

I've already make my case why those 82games stats are very misleading.

I don't hate the idea of Devean George; he has experience and can play decent defense.  However, at this point, I would rather roll the dice on Darius Miles.  Neither shoots well, so that's a weakness we'd have to deal with either way.  But Miles has superior athleticism, length, and overall talent.  I feel like even a less than 100% Miles might be better than a 100% George at this point and could certainly end up being even better than that.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't be surprised if DA gambles on Miles.  He would provide the length that the Cs need at the 3, and for little money.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
I was excited about the Posey signing, I will be ok with the George signing. I won't be anything near excited

I'd be more excited if Darius Miles signed.

For some reason, I hopped into this thread thinking it would be about the gigantic Kenny George of UNC-Asheville.  I have no idea why.

He might excite me more than Devean though - besides the fact that he isn't an actual option at present, of course.
