Did anyone hear this on WEEI today? My friend said the Braves offered Youk and Hansen for Texiera. Can someone please confirm/elaborate? Thanks

Peter Gammons said that.  But it was denied by Theo.  That's what I heard.

Good man Theo.

Youk is one of my favorite Sox and I hope he stays forever.

Not sure that I give up Youk if Texeira all that's coming back.  Not that Texeira bad or anything, but Youk offers so much on both sides.
Yup

I've been wondering how well-liked Youk is in the dugout though. After that Manny incident it seemed like no one had his back and basically blamed him for the entire thing. I personally don't like his attitude, he's always complaining. I'd do that trade in a second if we knew we could sign texiera

That would be a tough trade.  Youks is a good player, plays hard, and is a fan favorite.

Texeira, I think, is the better player.  However, Youks is outperforming him this year.  I think we need to stay status quo.

Texiera is better, both offensively and defensively.

However the question is can you lock him up long term?

I'd much rather wait until the offseason and make a deal for Matt Holiday to play left.

I believe Youk's numbers are better across the board.

If you choose to look at half of a season rather than an entire body of work, sure. Keep in mind Teixera is also younger.

Teixeira is a Boras client.  The only reason the Braves would consider a deal like this is that they don't think they can lock him up on the open market.

I believe Youk's numbers are better across the board.

Youk .314, .381, 15, 63, 56
Tex .271, .373, 17, 69, 54

And Youk is nearly a calendar year older.  That said, the money that Manny is unlikely to be making next year has to go somewhere.  Why not Texeira?

True, in general.  However, look at this year's stats (Youks vs. Tex):

Avg: .314 vs. .271
HR: 15 vs. 17
RBI: 63 vs. 69
OBP: .381 vs. .373
SLG: .552 vs. .484
Salary: $3 million vs. $12.5 million

Now, Teixera is actually younger, and has a better track record, so maybe it's worth it.  However, it's not clear that in terms of this year, Tex would be an upgrade.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
It's really not even close, long term. With the kind of numbers Teixiera put up in Texas, he projects to be much better than Youkilis. I am a fan of Youk (and he is a huge fan favorite), but we do need to reload the line-up with power hitters, with Manny on the decline (and/or on the go). All of this [of course] is contingent on locking up Teixiera for in a long term deal.

Youk is better defensively.  He's gold glove caliber at 1st and 3rd.  I would go for Holliday as a Manny replacement.  But this year I think you stand pat.

No, he isn't better defensively.

Texiera:

Defense isn't even very important in baseball, it's nice, but it doesn't win Championships like it can in Basketball.
