I'm going to make a prediction right now: James Posey will be drenched in champagne and clutching the trophy in the locker room at the end of the 2009 finals. Corey Magette and Ricky Davis will be at their homes watching it happen on TV. In other words, Posey will only go to a contender, and whoever he plays for he will put over the top.
I'll also make a prediction about what happens to that 2009 championship team four or five years later when Posey is in his last year of his new contract. I predict...actually, wait a minute, never mind, because who cares what happens that far down the road? Danny: keep Posey, no matter what it takes!!!
I like your prediction, except I have a question. Does that mean that you feel like if Posey signs with a team like the Cleveland LeBrons that will raise them to the level needed to beat us, even if we sign Maggette?
Good question. The Cavs are probably the weakest of the suitors for Posey. I'm picturing the Lakers and Pistons as the other two main suitors, and I do think Posey would put either one of those teams over the top. Detroit might be looking to shake things up more dramatically than simply adding a piece, they could trade core players. If the Lakers sign him, then I think they win it all. Cleveland's only real advantage is that it's Posey's home town, so he would love to win a championship there I'm sure. Posey by himself probably doesn't put Cleveland over the top in a 7 game series against the Cs (the semis should not have gone 7 games, the Cs are better than they played in that series), CLE would have to make some other moves. But what the heck, this is hypothetical, so I'll stick with my prediction. Posey will sign with a contender, and win a championship in 2009. Hopefully Boston.
If management doesn't sign Posey, at least they save some money. That's not really as good as another championship, but everybody likes money I guess, so I can't criticise them too much for that, business is business. When I fill the gas tank I don't get the premium unleaded, I get the one in the middle. If I'm driving someone else's car, I'll get the cheapest one and then lie and say I filled up with the one in the middle. So I understand, I'm not totally unsympathetic to management. For the last 22 years I've been thinking how happy I would be if the Cs just won one championship. Now they've done it, so I can't really complain too much if they decide to rebuild now. This team was great, I loved watching them this year, and that can never be taken away.
