Quote
The Celtics have made contract offers to two forwards in their own free agent James Posey and Clippers free agent Corey Maggette, sources told the Boston Globe. The most the Celtics could offer is the mid-level exception (about $5.8 million), and it's doubtful that they could sign both players. The terms of the offers were not disclosed.

Posey averaged 7.4 points and 4.4 rebounds and was a NBA Sixth Man of the Year candidate in his first season with Boston. The two-time NBA champion was a strong leader for the Celtics and opted out of the second year of a two-year deal on Monday to become an unrestricted free agent. Maggette averaged 22.1 points and 5.6 rebounds last season for the Clippers and played for Celtics coach Doc Rivers in Orlando during the 1999-2000 season.

I don't see Maggette accepting Boston's offer.

Playing third fiddle behind Ray and Paul isn't Maggette's type of music.

Wow. I was wondering about that earlier. As long as they offered to both Maggette and Posey, I'm happy. I wonder what the terms are. I'd guess that Maggette's is an MLE deal, but how many years? As for Posey, did we go right after him with an MLE deal, or are we starting with a 4-5 year non-Bird rights offer to see if he'd be willing to trade a mil a year up front for an extra year at the back end?
Go Celtics.

Hmm, I wonder how Elton, Baron, and Arena's being around in the free-agent market will affect Corey's chances of getting more than an MLE offer around the league.

I don't see Maggette signing here. He's in the prime of his career and he's a 20/5 guy. I doubt he takes a back seat to two star wings here in Boston. It doesn't hurt to make an offer, but I have no doubt in my mind that he will go somewhere else. He can get more minutes almost anywhere else in the league.

Maybe Maggette likes Doc and would like to be a part of a championship-caliber squad and try to sign a 2 year deal maybe? This could raise his stock for a final signing?

Haha, sounds contrived, and doubtful. But everything always seems to be, when the unexpected arrives!

this is a surprise. I'd definitely rather have Posey. We need those 3 bombs and versatile defense. ...I'm intrigued to see what else is cookin'.

Actually I'm not sure that's completely out of the realm of possibility but, more than likely this is a sign to Posey that the C's are willing to move on.  Remember James you are a 31 year old 6th man.  The balls in your court.

Ainge is trying to steal him.

With the Clippers going after Davis, they will have to renounce Magette.  No sign and trade.

No team with a lot of cap room looking for a player like him.

I would bet this was not the plan coming into FA.

I seriously doubt Maggette would sign myself but I'm curious to what the terms of the deal offered was?

Multi-year deal?  A club friendly deal similar to what we gave Posey last year? (One year with player option for second year)?  Simple one year deal with the hopes he'd take it to build himself into a better free agent next off-season?
