Pats are very thinned out at the secondary with both Carlton Davis III and Gonzo out this weekend.

Also, Pats are paying Gonzo too much money and he's still sitting out. Not good.

Kirk Cousins going to have a field day with this secondary this weekend

What a weird career Cousins has had.

Very hard game to gauge.  As are most in the league these days.

But GO PATS!
Yup

Like someone said, every game seems hard to gage these days.  LVR has beat some weaker teams, giving up a lot of yards.  They have a very good net turnover (+3).  The Pats have been stingy with yards given up but have coughed it up a lot  (-5 net turnovers).  I don't think you need to be an analytics genius to figure out what the key to the game is (take care of the ball stupid).

Even all banged up as the defense is right now, I think at home they are the better team.  But not enough better that they can overcome playing bad (turnovers, penalties, whatever).  I am hoping that the Pats will be able to run the ball vs. LVR.  Mix in enough efficient passing to keep them honest.  All the injuries on defense for the Pats is a concern, but I am not convinced that Cousins and the rest are good enough to take advantage of that.

One thing I continue to see as a weakness is containing the edge.  It is defense 101 (I was an OLB in high school).  You have to hold the edge.  I continue to see sloppy play on the edge against the run.  That should be so easy to fix. Players over pursue or think sack too much and boom, a big play off the edge.  Having Jones back should help.  I believe this is exactly why he is here.  Not for sacks, but to hold the edge.

No comments from the peanut gallery....Pats kicking ass, 38-10.  Maye playing great 3td passes and 1td run...344yds. Start of the 4th quarter, great game so far.

Wow the Pats came to play today. Shellacked the Raiders 45-17 and gave them a rude awakening.

Maye was terrific. His accuracy on long balls was amazing today.  He had time to throw which was great to see.  Kyle and Pop with big games.
But, injuries.

Man, I get the complaints about him, but Drake Maye's upside talent is just other worldly. That wheel route to Raridon late was honestly one of the best throws ive ever seen. Only like 5 guys in the league can make that throw.

399 total yards, 4 td and a rushing td in a blowout? Man's cooking right now

I know it?s talk radio, but there were many callers on WEEI two weeks ago who were calling for Tommy Salami to take over at QB and trading Maye for a bucket of balls if they could get it.

The guy is a freak athlete.  I really think not getting reps in preseason games is rough on him.  Also having a completely different receiving corps.

Anyhow?he did look pathetic the first 3 games.  Yesterday was a thing of beauty.

Yeah, the over-reaction on the first few games was stunning.  Drake Maye played amazing in 2025, an athlete like that does not just forget how to play or lose his athletic ability.  Maye played really bad those first 3 games.  It didn't look like he was ready, like he was not in sync with Josh McDaniels or the rest of the team.  He made some really bad decisions.  But a lot of people were way too quick to give up on him; to forget how good he was last season.

I have said it all along, even before the draft, that I think Maye is a bonafide star.  The arm, the legs, the mindset, he has it all.  What I don't like is that he has the gunslinger mentality.  That is fine sometimes, but it is also fine to check down and take the 7 yards sometimes too.  In the LV game, I still saw too many instances where he passed up a safe short pass for a long ball.  It worked out vs. LV, but against better teams, it may backfire.  Just like it is wrong to overreact to a couple of bad games, you also have to be careful not to overreact to a couple of good games.

The deep balls he threw were single coverage and not necessary bad decisions or highly risky decisions.  But there is still much more risk than just dumping it to Stevens in the flat.  I am nitpicking, but the potential issue with Maye is that he becomes overly confident with downfield throws.  If I am seeing this, I am sure the coaching staff is.

Didn't get to see any of yesterday's game but its great to see Maye seemingly turning things around.  Hopefully, that subsides some of the anxiety.  Pats should beat the Jets next week before heading into a big matchup with the Bears.  Schedule lightens up a bit after that.

I feel that the first 3 games of the season, Maye took 3 significant steps back. He looked indecisive, loose with the ball, and inaccurate. That was a legit sense of concern because they weren't all related to the offensive line or schemes. The previous game, I thought he took two steps forward, making better throws and showing his skill, although I still wasn't that comfortable with him on the endzone. He still had a bad fumble and looked a little uncomfortable, but much better. Yesterday he took another two steps forward. Not only did he show the skills from last year, he looked even better with accurate throws that made it easy for his receivers to catch.

Let's just keep this up but that was great to see.

Was also great to see the offensive line giving Maye some time.  Can't recall a game where Maye had this many plays in which he was waiting for the play to develop, waiting for receivers to break open.  He was terrific, but part of his success had to do with being able to breathe in the pocket.

Imagine how much better the Pats would be right now if they hadn't taken the entire preseason off.
