Yeah, the over-reaction on the first few games was stunning. Drake Maye played amazing in 2025, an athlete like that does not just forget how to play or lose his athletic ability. Maye played really bad those first 3 games. It didn't look like he was ready, like he was not in sync with Josh McDaniels or the rest of the team. He made some really bad decisions. But a lot of people were way too quick to give up on him; to forget how good he was last season.
I have said it all along, even before the draft, that I think Maye is a bonafide star. The arm, the legs, the mindset, he has it all. What I don't like is that he has the gunslinger mentality. That is fine sometimes, but it is also fine to check down and take the 7 yards sometimes too. In the LV game, I still saw too many instances where he passed up a safe short pass for a long ball. It worked out vs. LV, but against better teams, it may backfire. Just like it is wrong to overreact to a couple of bad games, you also have to be careful not to overreact to a couple of good games.
The deep balls he threw were single coverage and not necessary bad decisions or highly risky decisions. But there is still much more risk than just dumping it to Stevens in the flat. I am nitpicking, but the potential issue with Maye is that he becomes overly confident with downfield throws. If I am seeing this, I am sure the coaching staff is.
