I just checked Sportrac and I agree with you Roy.  Our limit appears to be $842,292.   The person on TV was looking at the first Apron clearly $8,892,292, which does nothing for the repeater tax, correct?

Correct.  The reasons for being below the tax are:

1.  It's step one in resetting the repeater tax;

2.  We don't pay any luxury tax this year;

3.  Ownership gets a distribution from the tax that other teams pay.

Being below the first apron opens up more flexibility in terms of trades and buyout signings, but we're safely below that tax line.

I saw something online that said we could offer $ 4million to a buy out and still be ok.  Not sure if this is true but the vet minimum for a 10 year player is  $3.6 million.  So in theory, we could out bid team and still stay under the limit for the luxury tax/repeater tax.  I am not sure if this is true but this is what the person was saying.  I think it might have been Forsberg.

They may just promote Harper, too.  I would prefer him over Shulga.  I think his Maine stats reinforce this as well.

That's no true.  If we want to stay below the tax, we have less than $1 million to spend on two players combined.

So I have had time to look at the numbers.  If we sign a player other than a rookie (some sources say it must even be a rookie draft pick, which makes the inclusion of Tonje in the Boucher dump even more important, since otherwise we might have to give Yam Madar a call) in our early signings, we cannot stay under the tax.  Feb 19 is our next signing deadline, when we have to get back to 14 players.  Even a player with 1 year of experience will cost $623,967 for the rest of the year, while a rookie (potentially draft pick) will cost only $387,713.  So a rookie plus a non-rookie is at least $1 million, which is more than we have left.  Two rookies will give us enough room to add someone else at the minimum for the final 4-5 days (presumably Harper) to get to 15 for the playoffs.

But we will not be in the market for anyone who is bought out, or non-rookie G-Leaguers, etc.  Maybe someone from an overseas league that gets free in April (China and Australia I think?)  But I am betting our roster in two weeks will have Shulga and Tonje on it, and Harper will be on it for the final weekend.

The one caveat is if the Celtics are already 100% sure White will miss an incentive, they could have a little more to play with.  But given they are all classified as likely to be earned, he already has hit at least one of them, and he is having a great year, I would not anticipate such a situation.

I have no issue with getting under the tax after they got so close by adding the big man they needed.   Trading away three guys that are not only not in the rotation, they have been passed by two-way contract guys.   Might as well replace them with the cheaper contract (eventually)

And the more I think about the Vuc trade, the more I like it in terms of future for setting up the team.   If he works out, sign him.   If he doesn't, they are far enough under the apron to trade a 1st round pick package and the Simons TPE to add someone that can help.

And who knows? Maybe Stevens went to Chisholm and said "hey, if I can save you $37 million this year without hurting the team, can I spend it next year?" Snd Chisholm said "Hell yeah".

I like to fantasize a lot.  ;D
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

So for accounting purposes there are 66 days left in the NBA season. A rookie minimum contract for an NBA player comes out to roughly 7,315 dollars a day. If they stay under the 14-man roster limit for the full 14 days allowed that would mean they could sign Max Shulga/John Tonje for a total of 52 days at 7,315 dollars a day or 380,400 dollar each, rough 761,000 total and stay just about 80k under the tax for the year.

Basically, expect them to run with just 12 guys through to the all-star break then add Tonje/Shulga on rest of season rookie min contracts at some point before coming back from the break.

Signing Ron Harper Jr is actually much more difficult. His minimum for tax purposes is the 2-year vet minimum which comes out to 13,196 dollars per day on a pro-rated deal which very quickly eats into their 840K of room. Probably why they brought back Tonje in that trade to begin with. If they want to add Harper to the playoff roster it will have to wait until very close to the end of the regular season. Not a big deal, he still has enough regular season eligibility to play out the year on the two-way contract.

I think there are also more convoluted stuff they could do involving 10-day contracts, but the simplest path is just signing Shulga/Tonje coming out of the all star break.
