Has Scheierman regressed?

Scheierman started to show some potential late last year.  After the All-Star break, he averaged 5.5 points on 36.8% 3PT% / .545 TS% in 16 minutes.  He also showed some intuitive passing skills.

Since then he's looked like hot garbage in summer league and preseason.

Was the solid stretch last season a fluke?

(Nothing against Scheierman, but it still irritates me that Brad passed on Filipowski.)

I have to admit I'm wondering what's up with him this season.  I'm not sure if it's Joe trying him out as someone who could run offense on the second unit since we're thin on PGs this year or he's trying too hard to show he deserves minutes with other guys on the team needing to do the same and in Baylor's case it's making him look worse.

Ignoring the obvious fact that he's behind JB, White, Simons and Hauser for SG/SF minutes, he's fighting Minott, Walsh and Hugo for what's left of playing time.  At this point, he's firmly behind Minott and losing ground to Hugo.  Walsh is the only one he may still be ahead of at this point and that's more because Walsh has been even worse than he has than anything Baylor has done on the court.

I'm not sure he ever 'a' gressed.  I mean, this kind of thing is super common.  New guy shows potential, has a little success, but comes down back to earth.  Seen it a million times.  As it is, he is a late first round pick that may or may not stick.

Scheierman is trying to do more on offense - and he can't do more.

Scheierman needs to simplify his game. Less is more. The only shots he should take on offense are wide open shots. Try not to do too much dribbling. Keep It Simple. That will get rid of most of the mental mistakes (on the offensive end).

Then the open question is how consistent can his outside shot be. He hasn't shown himself to be a high caliber shooter. He has shown himself to be a streaky / inconsistent shooter. He is not good enough defensively to stick in the NBA by being a streaky shooter. He has to be a reliable outside threat in the 35-37% range (at a minimum). That will decide whether can be useful enough on offense or not.

I would feel a hell of a lot better about his potential if he was 21, not 25.

No he just isn't very good.  Sometimes guys that aren't very good have some really nice games, but it doesn't make them any good.  And if you start to break down the numbers from last, he basically had 3 really good games when he had a GmSc (the bball ref metric, which while flawed is decent) above 10.  He had only 1 other game above 6.6.  His worst game of the year was the game directly after his best game of the year.  Again fairly typical of a guy that isn't very good.  He is a borderline NBA player, which is frankly what you should expect from a very old rookie taken at the end of the 1st round.  He may get a 2nd contract, but he may not.

He just looks slow to me, especially when dribbling, which severely limits his ability to be a PG.  I think he had a good month in March last season.  47% from 3 for the month.  6-7 in one game.  But even April he was back down to 24% from 3.  I have never seen anything from him that has gotten me overly excited.  With lack of athleticism, he would have to be a lights out shooter to make it, and he just isn't, or isn't so far.

I would have Scheierman (age 25) dead last of the 14 signed players, yes, behind Walsh (age 21) and Gonzalez (age 19).  And not that far ahead of the 2-way guys.  But he is not going anywhere.  His contract is fully guaranteed.  Could be worse, it is only $2.6M.

I think he should do us all a favor and switch back to playing football....Apparently he's a much better Quarterback than BB player.
