OKC just beat an 8 seed that lost its best player when that 8 seed was up by about 25 in Game 3, squeaked by a 4 seed that took them to seven after having just gone seven in the first round, a 6 seed, and then a 5 seed in the Finals, winning in seven when that 4 seed?s best player got hurt in Game 5 and was knocked out of the series early in Game 7. Denver beat an 8 seed, 4 seed, 7 seed and 8 seed in the Finals. But they are the champs, no excuses or diminutions.

The relevant argument against extending Joe is not diminishing the 24 title, which was legit and happened but it is now done. The argument is that in Joe?s other two years the Celtics had the best roster in the East and last year the best in the NBA, and came out of those two years with a conference finals loss to an 8 seed and a second round choke job, both of which were filled with opportunities to second guess the coach through failure to recognize moments, failure to motivate and failure to make needed adjustments to playing style and playing time.

50 wins would be a miracle and, for that matter, a waste.

Coach to win. Having players and coaches with the ability to perform well without their best player is not a waste. Developing talent and a winning mentality is plenty valuable, potentially more than a chance at one good asset/prospect.

More important than that, is to coach to develop your key young players. Allow them to sink or swim and learn from their mistakes. I'm not saying tank, but rather develop.  That includes JB.

I'm wondering if Coach Dumbo will be encouraged to keep the core players' minutes to reasonable limits to avoid playing them into the ground in some effort to gain a 6 seed that is meaningless to our real goal of competing for another title after Tatum returns. Although, I suspect that Jesus and the Wise Men could instruct Joe to develop the younger guys and keep Jaylen Brown's minutes reasonable and he would ignore them as well.

I think he will be tasked with something a little different this year. When he took over the team it was a win-now, make the most of the window we have team where even if it wasn't explicitly mentioned, the expectation was to make a deep playoff run and get to the finals. So his circle of trust was a lot smaller, because with less players rotations are simpler, permutations are less, its easier for the players to develop chemistry and combinations than playing with a larger pool of players and constantly changing lineups. So he had his nine and he rode them to the end because he wanted to develop that unit.

This season will be different, it's a bridge year, the team is expected to be in the bottom 4 of the East and isn't expected to even make the playoffs, let alone make a run. So I'm guessing his mandate will be to develop the players on the roster, either to see if they can be part of a title-challenging team in 2026, or if not, increase their value enough so that they can be traded for someone who can help with a title run, or discarded if they don't cut the mustard. I'm expecting him to give minutes to a lot more players for those reasons.
