Ben Wallace wasn't even drafted. Some other guys with very solid careers were not drafted including VanVleet, Dort, Reaves, Reid, Dunc Robinson, and Caruso among active players.
Add McConnell to that list.  Not sure if Covington is still active.

Tony Parker, 2001 Draft, 28th overall.

That year the C's took Joe Johnson @ 10, Kedrick Brown @ 11, and Joe Forte at 21.
Man it killed me when we traded Joe Johnson!!

Weren?t we set to get Parker but Red insisted on getting Joe Forte instead? That was Red?s last draft selection also. I remember Jim O?Brien really wanted Tony but was overruled by Red last minute. Sorry for the OT.

Back on topic: I have a feeling Hugo will be a part of this list in the future, fingers crossed.

Red was infatuated with Forte.

OK, I missed the second part of this, I think Kyle Filipowski will be a great player.  He'll become that stretch 5 that everyone wants.

Yeah, Filipowski looks impressive. Lot of upside there.

Guess I'm watching different games. He's exactly as as we thought he'd be. He's a fine offensive player, but has been pretty horrid defensively. Bona dominated him in stretches the other night. Guards are attacking him (g-league guards) with regular success.

Just doesn't compete on that side of the floor. He's out of position, slow-footed, not a rim protector, and not strong. At least Olynyk played decent positional defense. He reminds of of Frank Kaminsky.

I?ve hated Chris Wallace forever for that draft and for his later trade as Memphis GM of Pao Gasol to the Lakers.
Trading up to get the prize of that draft, the very same Pao Gasol, was likely possible - would have also prevented Pao to Lakers.  But Wallace missed on getting Parker, relying on   Red, but also missed another *2nd lottery* 2nd round classic in Gilbert Arenas (31l)

Can?t ever expect a perfect draft, but Joe Johnson, Parker, and Arenas would have been a nice talent infusion. Or trade the picks for 1, 2, or 3 for Gasol.  I bet Washington would love to have made that trade in retrospect.

Edit - and the most frustrating thing about the Joe Johnson trade was that according to reports they would have taken Kedrick Brown.

Yeah, his defense ain't great. I was pleasantly surprised by it in his rookie year - which is to say I expected it to be even worse than it was. I feel there is enough there physically to become a passable 4/10 defender like Olynyk was.

I haven't watched much of SL. I only saw his first game. I liked his aggressiveness on offense. Looking to score. That was always Olynyk's problem. He could have been a 17-18ppg scorer in the NBA and with that he would have had enough playing time to get 8rpg 4apg. But he was always gun-shy. And it kept him restricted to a bench role. He didn't use his high skill-level offensively often enough to compensate for his so-so defense. What I like about Filipowski is that he may have that assertiveness to do so.

On Adam Bona, I was impressed with him. He looks like he could give Andre Drummond a run for his money as backup center for Philly next year. Good physical talent there. Good effort. If he keeps working hard and developing, he can be a quailty backup center in the league. He doesn't have it all together yet but he has some things which are nice.

------------

I suppose a model for Filipowski is someone like David Lee.

I always think of Nick Van Exel as one of the 2nd round steals. It looked like LAL was dead and buried. Magic gone. Worthy about to go. Byron aging. Little there to be excited about.

And then almost out of nowhere this guy Nick Van Exel comes along and breathes fresh life into the franchise. Brings about Showtime 2.0. Those were some fun Lakers teams before Shaq arrived. Nick Van Exel & Vlade Divac. Eddie Jones. Cedric Ceballos. Elden Campbell. They played fun basketball.

To go with an oldie - Alex English.

2nd round 6th selection. 23rd pick overall in 1976. Finished 25,000 points 6,500 rebounds 4,000 assists 1,000 steals. Scored more than any other player in the Golden Decade of Basketball in the 1980s. One of the top 20 SFs of All Time.

One of those effortless looking scorers. Constant motion. Quick release. Can shoot from anywhere. Kept it Simple and Sweet.

Good stuff, I really enjoyed that post!
