Lakers/Hornets deal: Thats a lot for Mark Williams. He's a very good offensive center right now, and will provide an excellent lob partner for Luka. But his defense is actually pretty bad right now, he's very often out of position and just doesn't have good fundamentals. He's also a huge injury risk. The lakers have almost literally nothing left to trade. The Laker's defense is going to be rough with Reaves, Doncic and Williams. Their offense might be incredible. Good move by the hornets to pick up a premium future asset.

Pelicans/Raptors: Fine move for Toronto, but the fit is a bit weird. Ingram, Barnes and Barret are all guys who can shoot a little, but none is a huge volume guy. Hopefully they don't overpay Ingram.

Warriors/Heat: Good return for the Heat. Get an above average starter at a premium position in Wiggins ad what will probably be a pick in the teens this year. Allows them some more flexibility moving forward. For GSW its a big swing. Shooting will be tough bteween Greene/Butler, and they are now VERY old.

LeBron and Luka do lots of ball-handling & playmaking so having just one guard doesn't hurt them there but ... do the Lakers have enough perimeter shooting?

A Reaves = 7 threes on 37% per game
Hachimura = only 3.8 threes in 31mpg at 43%
DFinney Smith = 3.7 threes in 24mpg at 42% solid volume
Gabe Vincent = 3.3 threes in 20mpg at 34%
M Kleber = 2 threes in 20mpg at 35% last year

Vanderbilt is a non-shooter. Their two athletic bigs in M Williams and J Hayes are non-shooters. Cam Reddish is shooting 29% on low volume this season. Not a trustworthy outside threat.

LeBron and Luka are great at finding open three point shooters but but they don't have much shooting alongside them. They have rim finishers in Mark Williams & Jaxson Hayes. One legit shooter in Austin Reaves and a 2nd good shooter in DFS. Two low volume shooters in Hachimura and Kleber.

Is that enough shooting?

Mavericks want KD but it's almost certainly not happening - reports are that KD is telling teams he wants to stay in Arizona.  In fact, he was the Warriors first choice and they moved on to Butler because of this.

The Pelicans just traded Ingram and are now openly shopping Zion according to rumors.

The Mavericks ostensibly have both cap space and trade assets for a player like KD then, right?

Please do this it would be so funny

Mark Williams

Rookie year = 43 games played, 19mpg
2nd year = 19 games played, 26mpg
3rd year = 22 of 47 games played this year, 25mpg

Guy has had a lot of injury issues to give up such a bounty for.

Dave McMenamin @mcten

After huddling with Luka Doncic after the trade, he impressed upon Lakers? brass his desire to play with a lob threat, mobile big whose vertical spacing gives Doncic another option when making his reads, sources told ESPN.

Lakers had been looking for a big but once they got Luka this week, they knew exactly what kind of big they wanted. From what I?ve heard, in Luka?s initial basketball conversations he told Lakers GM Rob Pelinka he played best when he had a vertical lob threat. When Charlotte called saying they liked Knecht and might be willing to discuss Mark Williams, the deal came into place.

So the Lakers were 18th in defensive efficiency with Anthony Davis who is one of the top defensive big men in the league. They now have added Luka to their perimeter defensive issues and replaced AD with Mark Williams.

Where do you think this new LA Lakers defense will rate? It is hard to see them in the top 20 given they were only 18th with AD. Surely a bottom 10 defense. Out of playoff bound teams, probably the worst defensive team in the playoffs.

Funny I was screaming at the TV last draft night that Charlotte was about to make a great pick in Dalton Knecht and they inexplicably took Tidjane Salaun. Was gutted when Knecht fell all the way to LA and now they flipped that good fortune to a decent risk in Mark Williams.

Catching up on the trades:

The Lakers gave up a lot to get Mark Williams.  I can't remember seeing him play.  Seems like just what the Lakers need in theory.  We'll see if he can play at the required level.  Dalton Knecht appears to be a good player for CHA and we shall see how good LAL is in 2031 for that 1st round pick.  This is a wait and see trade.

I like Ingram on the Raptors.  A first and a second along with 2 players that aren't in your plans seems inexpensive for TOR.  I give TOR the win here.  Wonder if they (NOP) are trying to trade Zion too.

On the Butler trade, GSW should be better now if Butler can stay on the court.  They stay competitive for a couple more seasons, but not going to win a title with this group.  Guess this is all they want.  MIA did OK under the circumstances.  I don't think Adebayo, Herro, and Wiggins is anything you can build around.  In my mind, neither team really wins this one.

I saw NBA writers said he is next on the list now that Ingram is gone and that NOP will be making calls trying to trade Zion prior to the trade deadline later today.

Not much time to make a deal happen though.

Dalton Knecht in Charlotte reminds me so much of Adam Morrison. Knecht is what Adam Morrison would have been for Charlotte if he hadn't suffered that career altering / ending injury.

Knecht can be a 17-20ppg SF for Charlotte.

I wonder if ... if Brandon Miller continues to stagnate as a mediocre starting caliber SF, will Charlotte try to cash in and trade him. Not now but maybe this time next season. And if Knecht will end up being part of the reason propelling them to do so because they have a ready made replacement at SF who can step in and give them just as much scoring as Brandon Miller does.

That is going to be tough.  There is so much risk and uncertainty with Zion.  He could be as good as an MVP candidate or he could retire tomorrow and never play again.  The range is crazy.  At least with someone like Ingram, you know pretty much what you are getting.

If I was NOP, I would just keep him unless I got a really solid deal, which I don't think they will.  You can always trade him later, he is under contract through 2027-28 on fairly reasonable money for a player with his potential.  He is only 24.  No need to reach on a trade right now.  Not sure his trade value is going to go any lower but could go up if he plays even decent for the rest of the season.

The Miami Heat are working through a resolution with Kyle Anderso, after the portion of the multiteam megadeal that would have sent him to the Toronto Raptors fell through, sources told ESPN?s Shaka Charania.

That language sounds like a buyout is coming if he is not traded today.  Would love to pick up Slo-Mo for the rest of the season for some extra depth at the 4.
