I don't think this will quite work out for the current iteration of the Lakers, but it gives them a star for the next 10 years. It gives them the ability to unfortunately stay relevant going forward.

The problem is not that Dallas didn't want Luka or their opinion that they weren't winning with Luka or that they think that after the Celtics destroyed them last Summer that defense wins championships...

The problem is that Luka has way more trade value than what they got in return. Unless there are details about Luka's health we are unaware of, and probably even then, they Luka got traded for pennies on the dollar.

NBA ratings have been tanking
Suddenly the second biggest market gets life pumped into it for a bag of chips.

This trade for the macs makes 0 sense.

This smells of league corruption.

I don't think this will happen but just looking for bright spots:

It's not a foregone conclusion that Luka will resign with the lakers.  He's a free agent and they can't pay him the supermax so maybe he still hits the market and listens to offers.

He probably will sign with them and will likely be there for a long time but that huge financial negotiating chip that Dallas would have had is not there for the lakers.

So aggravating.  Idk if it?s league corruption but am I correct in understanding that Lukas agent only wanted to deal with LAL?  And if so, was Dallas handcuffed once it was clear that they wanted to deal him?

Idk how concerned I am this year, but - here we go again, LAL gets another top 5 player, and will have him for the next ten years.  Clearly another big name will join him.  I won?t let myself root for injury, but I?m morally ok to root for Luka never watching his weight and never maturing to the level of professional that is needed to lead a championship team.  The odds are now with the Lakers taking over (it was inevitable) the most championships.  I knew they?d get their next top 5, but I did think it would be post LeBron. Dreading the Luka smile in purple and gold.

I am stunned that they traded Luka for so little.  I saw Nico Harrison doing a press conference and he did not instill confidence.  I get that they don't want to give a lazy dough boy a super max but this particular lazy dough boy took a team to the finals nearly singlehandedly.  Most teams would not make this stand, we'll see how it turns out.  I also wonder if they have overrated Anthony Davis, at this point in his career.  I don't think the Davis, Irving, Thompson team is going to be all that good.  5 years ago, maybe.

As to the Lakers, I think they will figure it out but LeBron will have to adjust, become more of a true PF.  You have to let Luka be the primary initiator most of the time.  LeBron can play a role like Horford.  Of course LeBron is much better than Horford but not all that much different in physical size.  LeBron will have to defend in the paint and rebound, in addition to the scoring and passing that he can produce.  LeBron right now averages 7.6 rebs and 9.1 assists.  He will need to up the Rebs and probably will end up with fewer assists with Luka handling the ball more.

The Celtics play well when they go with Horford as their lone big but Tatum makes up for the lack of size.  OKC play most of the time with 4 guards and a 7-footer but LAL doesn't have a 7-footer.  Maybe Vanderbilt can provide some defense and rebounding, I don't know.  Luka did carry a lesser Mavs team to the finals.  The LAL roster is imperfect, and don't have a ton of time to figure it all out, but with LeBron, it is a better roster than last season's Mavs roster.

I saw some Dallas fans arguing (1) not an NBA conspiracy (2) but a Nike conspiracy.

Mavs GM Nico Harrison a Nike guy. Sent Luka (Nike guy) to LA where Luka would be far more valuable. That Nico was acting in Nike's interests and not the Mavs when they made this deal.

The problem is that Luka has way more trade value than what they got in return. Unless there are details about Luka's health we are unaware of, and probably even then, they Luka got traded for pennies on the dollar.

This is where the Mavs fans who are saying this are coming from. Why was Nico so intent on sending Luka to the Lakers? They could have gotten better returns elsewhere. But Nico was only looking at LAL.

Some great scenes outside the Mavs arena. Clips on news channels up on Youtube. Some fans brought coffins to the Arena. Treating this trade as a death.

Mavs fans mourning hard. They hate this trade.

Mavs fans also criticizing ownership for not being willing to pay Luka the big contract extension. Say this new ownership is not like the old ownership under Mark Cuban that was loyal to Dirk. This new ownership has no loyalty. Not to Luka. Not to fans. They only care about money.

It makes no sense, especially since it seems Luka was a bit peeved and seemly unaware. Did not seem in a rush to leave .

Lakers fans all happy , as they should be , being gifted the player they wanted to replace LeBron with anyway .

This has to be in top 10 all time sports sports trade mistakes.  And maybe top top three basketball screwups .

Luka is already lazy as heck . The lakers with Bron have been the most heartless lazy team team in the league . LeBrons low energy, stand and watch won?t help Luka on defense.

Now that Luka will handle the ball 75 % of the time on offense ,  Bron will be a statue just standing on the court like a spectator.

This is a good move for this year and next for the Mavs.

Luka does nothing to help the Lakers win now.

If u gotta trade Luka, maybe Miami for Butler & Herro, of course have get a third team involved..Atlanta for Trae & Capela maybe..least u have young guys like Herro or Trae plus I wouldn?t had traded him in the West especially lakers
C/PF-Horford, Baynes, Noel, Theis, Morris,
SF/SG- Tatum, Brown, Hayward, Smart, Semi, Clark
PG- Irving, Rozier, Larkin

per ESPN Mavs approached the Lakers first

AD was their target. Why they did not put Luka on the trade block. I don't know if LAL was the only team they talked to but it sounds like that was the case.

Can?t believe the Hawks are no longer on the hook for the worst trade involving Luka anymore lol

Haha

i don?t think i?ve ever seen a trade so absurd that people straight up refused to believe it was real

That was me. I did not believe it for 1-2 hours after being first reported. I thought Shams' twitter was hacked. No way could this trade be real. It is ridiculous. Then all these ESPN videos came out talking about the trade

Luka will be remembered as a laker now once he retires. Nobody will talk about his time with the mavs. Just like kareem. Just like shaq.

Yup.

Luka getting traded for "conditioning" before zion is weird. But for 31 year old injury prone AD that's absurd

I liked this one.

Mavs called security at the arena to clear out the fans memorial for Luka. Got rid of everything.

They didn't want the bad PR. The visuals of this.
