It reminds me of some of the CB Draft trades back in the day.

Kirk Goldsberry of The Ringer, speaking on the "Bill Simmons Podcast" on Monday, revealed the Mavericks even left some assets on the table from the Lakers.

One of my sources inside the Lakers was indicating that the deal was bigger and that there were two firsts, and it was Dalton Knecht, and the deal got whittled down because I think Rob Pelinka was able to convince the Dallas Mavericks that Luka is a lot of risk.

Nico:  Hey, what could you offer for Doncic?

Pelinka:  Are you serious?  I don't have a lot of draft capital, but what about AD, Knecht, Christie and two #1s?

Nico:  Sounds good.

Pelinka:  Err...  I spoke with ownership.  They don't think that Luka is worth that type of risk.  What if we kept Knect out of the deal?

Nico:  Sure.

Pelinka:  Thumbs down, again, buddy.  Jeanie is just really risk averse.  I can only do one #1.

Nico:  Let's get this done before I do something stupid and talk to other teams.

I just don't buy it.  The NBA won't allow the Mavs to move.

Stat: Lakers are 15 wins 8 losses since Max Christie came into the starting lineup (53 win pace).

I heard one analyst saying Max Christie is the equivalent of a 2nd 1st round pick in this trade. That you would give up a 1st to get him in a trade at this point since he has come along offensively in recent months to be a dependable 2 way player.

Kyrie's games played for last few years

2023-24 = 58 games
2022-23 = 60 games
2021-22 = 29 games
2020-21 = 54 games
2019-20 = 20 games
2018-19 = 67 games (Celtics)
2017-18 = 60 games (Celtics)

So only 1 season in the last 7 season has Kyrie managed above 60 games in a single season. Kyrie averages 49-50 games a season over those seasons.

Your other main man is AD who has been criticized throughout his career for injury proness / made of glass.

Mark Cuban

#1 = a few years ago, Cuban said if he had to chose between Luka and his wife, he'd chose Luka

#2 = Chandler Parsons sent Cuban a text message saying he was so confused by this trade. Cuban replied "that makes two of us".

That is the closest I have seen to a Cuban comment on this deal.

I've had some time to think about it and I get it from Dallas' perspective. I'm not saying I agree with it - but I can see the thinking.

Nico identified Anthony Davis as the one guy he'd ever trade Luka for. Once he figured that out, there isn't much need to engage other teams. If AD is the guy, then Lakers were the play. Could they have gotten more assets like picks? Probably, but if the goal is to win now and you think AD is the piece to get you there, would you let a deal blow up over a future pick you don't care about when now is the priority? And there is some urgency since Luka is eligible to sign the extension this offseason.

Speaking of - I also understand not wanting to give Luka that supermax. If he can't get motivated to get in shape after losing the Finals, I don't think he's going to be more motivated after you hand him a contract that guarantees him $345 million.

This is a good post, and I think it makes sense, except that I think (pretending to be Dallas) that if now is the priority, I don't think I can reasonably suggest that trading Doncic is a good idea.

This deal was done on the downlow between two people who trusted each other.

Trading a 25 year old superstar all-nba guard for a great but older and at times broken down Anthony Davis is a huge coup.

Only the Lakers were given an opportunity at Doncic and man what a steal of a trade for them.

They have their future ensured for the next 5-10 years. Even after Lebron retires, Doncic will be the new face of the franchise.

Sounds like the definition of collusion.  Nix the deal NBA! Lol.  Yeah it sucks the fakers continue to get bailed out.  Luka is LA sucks.

That's debatable if you look at it from Dallas' perspective.

Luka is great, no question about that. But he's injury prone too. It's far more likely that both players will be injured than not by the time the playoffs roll around, so you have to guess which one is more likely to be available. Because availability is the best ability, right? AD played more games last season than Luka. This season, AD has played 42 games compared to Luka's 22. Most of AD's injuries are random freak injuries, Luka keeps dealing with lower extremity issues and his conditioning isn't doing him any favors.

Again, I'm not saying I agree with the trade. I think Dallas should've asked for more from the Lakers for sure. But I can also see the line of thinking here once I get past the initial shock and emotion.

I'd like to see LAL dump LeBron now. I do not believe in a LeBron / Luka duo. They are too similar. They both need the ball in their hands. Luka even more than LeBron. At least LeBron has become less ball dominant as he has gotten older. He realizes his limitations. The rest of the squad around them is too weak. Their guard play stinks. Their big man play stinks. They cannot win with Luka & LeBron.

I'd like to see them trade LeBron and whatever other long term contracts they have and get into FA. They will be the #1 destination in the league. Luka, LA, Lakers fame. Everyone who is looking for a change will want to go there.

Unfortunately, I think they will be loyal to LeBron and waste 1-3 years of Luka's career doing so ... when instead they could be reloading and building a top tier title contender.

HUH? that all sounds great, thanks for the silver lining lol

It Luka and Kyrie can work Luka/LeBron will have no problems. Now LeBron gets to rest even more half the time.

My question is what?s the next move for LA? The fact they have Reaves and Knecht still on the team as trade pieces is criminal. If they can acquire a rim protector look out. They aren?t far off from becoming a serious threat than previously.

As for the Mavs, watch what happens to Kyrie and AD now that they don?t have that star to fall back on. You think Klay Thompson signed up to play with Anthony Davis? They lose in the first or second round and fade away. Kyrie probably walks first.
