Red Sox are 59-51. They just won 4 out of the last 5 games and are in a wildcard spot. Will they get an another starting pitcher by the deadline tomorrow?

Steven Matz (Lefty reliever) for Blaze Jordan (third base prospect). I don't know Matz all that well, but it appears he is a solid arm for the bullpen.  Also a complete rental.

So, a rental LHP who is ready for AARP, for a power hitting 1B, which btw is a need right now.  Reminds me of the deal for Crochet, when we sent Teel, a C prospect also a position of need.

I am not sure how the salary works but STL is paying $8.7M of this year's salary and BOS is paying $3.8M.  That seems like a normal proration of the salary with only about 1/3 of the season remaining.  So a fairly inexpensive rental in terms of salary.

As to Blaze Jordan, I can only go by what Google tells me.  He is only 22 so probably is a good solid prospect, but still just an obscure prospect.  Of course with the Red Sox's luck, he will probably break out and become an all star.

Blaze Jordan, a first baseman/third baseman prospect in the Boston Red Sox organization, has seen his prospect ranking fluctuate. While he was once considered a top prospect, even reaching #7 in the Red Sox system according to MLB Pipeline entering 2022, he has since fallen off some prospect lists. However, after a strong performance in Double-A, he was promoted to Triple-A Worcester and is now considered a prospect to watch. SoxProspects.com ranks him as the No. 38 prospect in the Red Sox farm system.

#38 prospect?  I have no idea how these things are determined, but he had an over .900 OPS at Portland this year.  He hit for average and solid (not amazing) power, as well.

Yes, he has been as high as #7 in the Sox organization back in 2022 but apparently fell down to #38 at the start of this season.  He is having a good year and moving back up.  His AA numbers look really good this year.  I have no idea either on what to make of the rankings.  Based on this trade, it does not seem that the Red Sox value him all that highly.

I am not going to panic over trading him though.  Most of these prospects at this level never amount to anything.  Maybe Blaze will be the exception.

Shane Bieber would have been nice..  :P

The Toronto Blue Jays acquired Shane Bieber in a trade Thursday with the Cleveland Guardians, betting that the former Cy Young Award winner will be able to quickly bounce back from injury rehabilitation.

The first-place Blue Jays sent right-handed pitching prospect Khal Stephen, a second-round draft pick from Mississippi State, to the Guardians in the trade, which was announced Thursday.

Bieber won the AL Cy Young in the COVID-shortened 2020 season and was consistently one of the league's best starting pitchers before suffering a season-ending elbow injury after two starts in 2024. He re-signed with the Guardians in the offseason for a $10 million salary in 2025 and a $16 million player option in 2026.

Bieber, 30, has not pitched in the majors since undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2024 but has made three minor league rehab starts in recent weeks. The right-hander worked four innings in his most recent outing Tuesday with Double-A Akron, striking out seven on 57 pitches, and was expected to rejoin Cleveland's rotation at some point in August.

He is pretty low cost for this season (TOR pays about $3M for the rest of the season) but he has a player option for next season at $16M.  I was intrigued by him but there is a lot of risk.  There is no guarantee that he will pitch at a major league level this season or next.  If he is bad, he picks up his option and you are stuck with him.  If he is good, he declines and is a FA seeking big bucks.

He has been pitching in the minors as I understand it so I am sure the scouts have checked him out.  He may help TOR win a title or he may not do anything, lot of risk.

the Padres swung a blockbuster deal for Athletics closer Mason Miller on Thursday at the MLB trade deadline, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Starter J.P. Sears is also heading to the Padres in the deal. San Diego reportedly paid a steep price to acquire Miller. The Padres reportedly gave up shortstop Leodalis De Vries in the trade, per Passan. De Vries entered the 2025 season as a consensus top-20 prospect in the game. The Athletics are also reportedly receiving three pitchers in the deal.

Wow, they gave up a lot.

Reportedly we gave up a decent prospect (Tibbs) to rent a pitcher with nearly a 5.00 ERA?

Seems like a low risk move to me. Gave up a 2nd round draft prospect for a guy that won the Cy Young a few years ago and just recently turned 30.
