They probably should have just paid the money.  Between the loss of talent (and resulting affect on bowl eligibility) along with the bad press, the damages would seemingly be worth more than $97k.

It's kinda funny.  A bunch of old 30 for 30s dropped on Netlfix recently and my girlfriend & I watched the Pony Excess one about all the stuff that went down at SMU back in the 70s and 80s.

You certainly see all that stuff in a new light in this day & age of NIL.

They probably won?t for privacy reasons, but knowing the name of the assistant coach who made the promise of 100K would be key and hearing his side.

Because if true then I 100% side with Sluka. No one should work if they aren?t given the pay and/or benefits that were promised.

As for the bigger issue about the NIL agreements and legal matters, that?s on the NCAA. But the assistant coach is still part of the team in a paid official role and represents the organization so if he told Sluka that even in a verbal agreement then I can see why Sluka made his decision

This UNLV situation would never ever happen at an SEC school. The SEC bagmen deliver every single time

Not funny and he's completing forgetting the Jaden Rashada/Florida NIL controversy which is a much bigger deal with a lawsuit actually being filed.

Being part of an organization doesn't mean you can make financial commitments for an organization.  Only certain employees are given responsibilities to do so.  No school is going to allow an assistant coach to make such a commitment.  For many reasons including that pay for play is not allowed.

But ignoring that where's the proof?  Text message?  Email?  Are we supposed to believe that Sluka and his representatives just accepted an assistant coaches' verbal statement with getting any other assurances.  NIL isn't supposed to be pay for play.  Schools and coaches are NOT supposed to be directly involved in NIL deals.  That's what collectives are for.  So where's the proof of interaction with the UNLV collective on this 100k deal?  If there is proof, where's the lawsuit?

UNLV got a late offer to cover the 100k but turned it down.

UNLV's statement.
"UNLV Athletics interpreted these demands as a violation of the NCAA pay-for-play rules, as well as Nevada state law. UNLV does not engage in such activity, nor does it respond to implied threats. UNLV has honored all previously agreed-upon scholarships for Matthew Sluka. UNLV has conducted its due diligence and will continue to operate its programs within the framework of NCAA rules and regulations, as well as Nevada state laws."

Good start to the weekend.  Miami survives a last second hail mary pass which was ruled complete but overturned after review.  Controversial since none of the TV replays showed clear evidence either way so it'll be interesting to hear the justification for doing so.  Rutgers defeats Washington surviving a last second field goal attempt to tie the game.

Top 25 matchups on Saturday.
Oklahoma State at Kansas State  -  Both teams already have a Big12 loss so the loser probably won't make the championship game.

Louisville at Notre Dame  -  Notre Dame can't afford a 2nd loss.

Georgia at Bama  -  The biggest game so far and may end up being the biggest game for the regular season.  I was a lot more confident Bama would win before a bunch of talking heads started picking them.  Bama has relied on explosive plays for TDs.  Are they going to be able to get any against Georgia's defense which hasn't allowed a TD so far.

Illinois at Penn State  -  Illinois is undefeated but Penn State dominates B1G teams other than Ohio State and Michigan.

Other interesting games.
Kentucky at Ole Miss -  Kentucky almost beat Georgia so that ought to give them a chance against Ole Miss but I think Ole Miss wins handily.

Wisconsin at USC - USC ought to shake off the loss to Michigan and win handily especially with Wiscy playing their backup QB.

Oklahoma at Auburn - Can Oklahoma get their 1st SEC win?  Both teams are playing musical chairs with their QBs hoping to get some semblance of an offense.

Arkansas at Texas A&M - Arky playing against the Texas teams often turn into good games.

Colorado at UCF - Need UCF to win to keep all the prime hype from resurrecting.

Fresno State at UNLV -  Wouldn't have list this game except for UNLV's QB redshirting over NIL.

All I know is that my Eagles are not looking good today.  Rough news with Castellanos being out and Grayson has not looked good so far.  Nor has the Eagles defense.

They've still got a chance.

Phew....big sigh of relief there.  Talking about an escape.  I'll take the W, though.

BC is a resilient squad, with their backup QB and down 20-7 late in the 3rd, they come back to win
