I can't help but think he could have gotten more in free agency

There was this quote that came out a couple of days ago from Jake Fischer:

Quote
I heard from so many player agents that you don?t want to get to free agency anymore:

There used to be a thought that they could take a shorter deal, and get back out there on the open market and get more.

That didn?t work for Gary Trent Jr. That didn?t work for Caleb Martin. It didn?t work for Buddy Hield. Keep going down the list for guys who are still available, like Tyus Jones.

Agents now want to get their guys traded first to a situation that they have some type of knowledge are looking to reward said player with an extension. They want to circumvent free agency altogether.

So this probably applies here too.

Yeah.  How many marginal starter / backups wings did better than Hauser this summer?  Isaiah Joe, barely?  And he was also an extension.

Very few guys seemed to get the full MLE.

I think Brad made a good calculated bet here. Two benefits: 1. the Celtics are now known as the destination that will reward role players with aforementioned extensions 2. this inefficiency where starters/sixth men like Hield and Trent Jr. get the minimum is likely to close by next summer. GMs and owners got caught flat-footed by the mid-year CBA deal. Demand will almost certainly be higher next summer.

I'm happy to see the Celtics get Hauser locked up. Was hoping to see him closer to Pritchard's number, but Brad has a way of giving fair contracts, not necessarily great value ones.

I agree with bdm's post and it does seem like more lower tier starters/higher end bench guys are getting squeezed. Not that we would have wanted it to get to that point next year with Hauser, but we just did that with Grant and got a couple of 2nds out of it. Not sure how much Hauser will go for in a trade if we go that route, but it's at least not a contract that will kill us.

I had said in another thread that 4 years and $48 million seemed a little high.  I think this deal is win win. Players like Hauser are not getting big deals on the open market due to the new CBA.  Usually players get way more than I think, but not as much this season. I also think Houser still has some ceiling. I don?t know what will come of all the taxes and other restrictions due to the second apron. But for now I am happy that we have Hauser.

Glad to have Hauser signed. Good deal for the Cs and congratulations to Hauser who is going to make over 50M before he?s 30.  Maybe he could have gotten more, but dang, that?s a lot of money.

One thing to note about this offseason and deals relative to other offseasons ? the new cap rules are biting a little, but also revenue came in lower than expected because a bunch of RSNs owned by Diamond Media stopped paying their bills.  This lowered the cap and tax lines by a few million from where they were projected last summer, and even more from where they were projected earlier.  Next year the cap will certainly rise by 10% because of new national media right, and will go up by 10% for several years in a row.  Accordingly, money might flow a bit freer in the future.

For several seasons during this current Tatum/Brown era, I have harped on the need to add a knock-down catch & shoot guy, like Kyle Korver.
I assumed we would have to trade for such a player after several bust draft picks. But we developed an undrafted free agent instead.
I am happy for Hauser and for the team. Brad doing a great job securing this roster for a long-term run at more titles.

Totally reasonable deal, maybe even a little less than I expected.

That said I would be pretty surprised if he's on the team past next year. Even a starting salary of 10 million comes with a nearly 80 million dollar salary+tax price in 25-26 given the repeater penalty and adjusted tax rates. So he'll probably end up getting traded for draft pick(s).

I cannot express my hatred for this CBA contract strongly enough - It penalizes great management that builds and then tries to maintain a championship team. The Celts did this the right way, thru the draft, smart trades and player development and what do they get for their efforts after finally winning the title ? An $80M penalty for a $10M/year salary. Ridiculous.

The league's best years were the Golden 80's when you had a handful of elite teams that were allowed to maintain and even add to their rosters with smart management. The genius of Red and Jerry West and, to a lesser degree, the teams constructed in Philly, Milwaukee, Detroit are great examples of what made that era the best. Compare that with the idea of random, non-descript teams becoming champions only to be pushed away in short order to make room for another random, non-descript team to win. We are not quite there yet, but that is where we are headed. Gotta think the socialist-in-the-commissioner's office is smiling.   8)

Crazy cheap. Banner 19.

He'll turn 30 next time he becomes FA, so will have one more opportunity to get another bigger deal - shooters age fairly well.

Hauser was a remarkably important piece in our team's success.  Excellent value for his contributions.  Durable.  Good defender.  Makes quick decisions with the ball, moves it immediately if he doesn't have an opening for his shot.
Contributes even if his shot isn't falling.

Brad has done an A+++ job.

Reasonable contract in vacuum but with all the tax implications that is a lot to take on.

Better this than flushing a contender down the toilet, Nuggets style.

They're all in, they know this type of window doesn't come around often. Whoever ends up buying the team will have to deal with the tax implications later as they will be looking at a $400m+ payroll and tax bundle in 2 years time anyway. And those long term liabilities will probably be baked into the valuation anyway.

it will end up like the NFL where you just have a ton of mediocre teams and bad football being played

Ya its not exactly that Sam himself will cost 80 million, although that will be the output. Its a function of A) Being in the repeater tax in 25-26 B) Being so deep into the tax that every dollar is taxed at 6.75x and C) The new CBA rules making both A and B more expensive then they used to be.

Celtics is worth about 6 billion dollars. 6000 million dollars. I'm sure the incoming owners can afford to account for the extra 80 million that will be owed because we have locked up a guy, who seriously will help our efforts to win another chip, and further increase the value of the team.
