Reasonable contract in vacuum but with all the tax implications that is a lot to take on.
Better this than flushing a contender down the toilet, Nuggets style.
For sure!
Moranis, you seem to wince/groan at everyone of these extensions. I?m confused, what would you do differently? How would you maintain this teams championship window?
I had no issue with White or Tatum extensions. And Hauser's is fine, but there are downsides to this with the tax. 11 million is fine, but when it counts at like 50 million it isn't manageable for more than a year or so. That is the cost of the 2nd apron these days. It makes keeping teams together impossible long term and at some point the team is going to have to make choices. As long as the Hauser type contracts don't force moving off of the Tatum type players it isn't a real issue. And I do think the team is probably going to have to choose 2 or 3 of the 5 big contracts at some point (I say 2 or 3 because if you keep Tatum and Brown it will be very hard to keep any of Holiday, White, or Porzingis while if you kept Tatum or Brown it would be easier to keep 2 of the others). The shedding of salary may come as early as next summer but is probably more like a 2 year down the road problem. Again make the moves and go all in now, but the toll will be paid when the team has to break up.
But everyone already knew all this, especially once the new deal was signed. So the only choice is to sign guys or not.
I mean, I suppose we can try to trade guys but for assets down the road, but that is only going to hurt this team now. By the way, what DO you want anyway?
In my book, there is really only one think that the team COULD do to remain a contender and not be as expensive. The thing is, it is still much more sustainable to have 1 of 2 super duper stars and surround them with role player than having a team full or really good players that I need to get paid. That is the biggest issue with how the team is built. The jays effectively cost the same the very best players who can do more with less.
But I don't think a consolidation trade of stars is realistic either.
