Totally reasonable deal, maybe even a little less than I expected.

That said I would be pretty surprised if he's on the team past next year. Even a starting salary of 10 million comes with a nearly 80 million dollar salary+tax price in 25-26 given the repeater penalty and adjusted tax rates. So he'll probably end up getting traded for draft pick(s).

I'm curious to see how they structure the contract. Is it just a standard ascending deal? Probably. But if they make it descending and start it higher it could make it for useful in case they want to use Sam as trade bait for a player next offseason, sicne they can't bring back more in salary then they trade out starting it higher opens up options.

Reasonable contract in vacuum but with all the tax implications that is a lot to take on.

Better this than flushing a contender down the toilet, Nuggets style.

For sure!
Moranis, you seem to wince/groan at everyone of these extensions. I?m confused, what would you do differently? How would you maintain this teams championship window?

trade our stars for lebron?s salary filler

I had no issue with White or Tatum extensions. And Hauser's is fine, but there are downsides to this with the tax.  11 million is fine, but when it counts at like 50 million it isn't manageable for more than a year or so.  That is the cost of the 2nd apron these days. It makes keeping teams together impossible long term and at some point the team is going to have to make choices.  As long as the Hauser type contracts don't force moving off of the Tatum type players it isn't a real issue.  And I do think the team is probably going to have to choose 2 or 3 of the 5 big contracts at some point (I say 2 or 3 because if you keep Tatum and Brown it will be very hard to keep any of Holiday, White, or Porzingis while if you kept Tatum or Brown it would be easier to keep 2 of the others).  The shedding of salary may come as early as next summer but is probably more like a 2 year down the road problem.  Again make the moves and go all in now, but the toll will be paid when the team has to break up.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

Fantastic deal. One of the best shooters in the NBA who's also decent defensively for this price is an absolute bargain. Amazing work by Stevens. On almost any other team Hauser would be a starter. Quality player.

Ok, so you just have a bit of a negative Nancy outlook despite agreement that running it back is the best course. I mean, what else could we do that would be better. All these contracts are tradeable to get us under the 2nd apron or tax in a few years.

But everyone already knew all this, especially once the new deal was signed.  So the only choice is to sign guys or not.

I mean, I suppose we can try to trade guys but for assets down the road, but that is only going to hurt this team now.  By the way, what DO you want anyway?

In my book, there is really only one think that the team COULD do to remain a contender and not be as expensive.  The thing is, it is still much more sustainable to have 1 of 2 super duper stars and surround them with role player than having a team full or really good players that I need to get paid.  That is the biggest issue with how the team is built.  The jays effectively cost the same the very best players who can do more with less.

But I don't think a consolidation trade of stars is realistic either.

Yeah, keep running it back until the teams falls out of top-tier contention.  Then, we can still reset around Tatum and/or Brown.

Yes, but not for another year. They have a tremendous amount of flexibility with how they want to proceed with this roster. If Zinger can't say healthy, they can trade him but still keep all their depth. If Zinger does, they can trade guys like Hauser to keep flexibility.

Hauser is just another guy. $11m per year is good living.
The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.

I can't help but think he could have gotten more in free agency

There was this quote that came out a couple of days ago from Jake Fischer:

Quote
I heard from so many player agents that you don?t want to get to free agency anymore:

There used to be a thought that they could take a shorter deal, and get back out there on the open market and get more.

That didn?t work for Gary Trent Jr. That didn?t work for Caleb Martin. It didn?t work for Buddy Hield. Keep going down the list for guys who are still available, like Tyus Jones.

Agents now want to get their guys traded first to a situation that they have some type of knowledge are looking to reward said player with an extension. They want to circumvent free agency altogether.

So this probably applies here too.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

Yeah.  How many marginal starter / backups wings did better than Hauser this summer?  Isaiah Joe, barely?  And he was also an extension.

Very few guys seemed to get the full MLE.

Hauser and Pritchard combined are making less than Duncan Robinson
