Totally reasonable deal, maybe even a little less than I expected.
That said I would be pretty surprised if he's on the team past next year. Even a starting salary of 10 million comes with a nearly 80 million dollar salary+tax price in 25-26 given the repeater penalty and adjusted tax rates. So he'll probably end up getting traded for draft pick(s).
I cannot express my hatred for this CBA contract strongly enough - It penalizes great management that builds and then tries to maintain a championship team. The Celts did this the right way, thru the draft, smart trades and player development and what do they get for their efforts after finally winning the title ? An $80M penalty for a $10M/year salary. Ridiculous.
The league's best years were the Golden 80's when you had a handful of elite teams that were allowed to maintain and even add to their rosters with smart management. The genius of Red and Jerry West and, to a lesser degree, the teams constructed in Philly, Milwaukee, Detroit are great examples of what made that era the best. Compare that with the idea of random, non-descript teams becoming champions only to be pushed away in short order to make room for another random, non-descript team to win. We are not quite there yet, but that is where we are headed. Gotta think the socialist-in-the-commissioner's office is smiling.
